Collingwood Magpies vs Melbourne Demons Prediction, Preview, Team News and More: AFL Round 13, 2024
For the first time this season, AFL fans will witness a Monday game as the Collingwood Magpies and the Melbourne Demons clash in the traditional King's Birthday thriller at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This Round 13 match will feature two teams sitting next to each other in the standings, competing for a spot in the top eight.
Defending premiers, Collingwood is one team hit with injuries this season, and the absence of multiple key players saw the Magpies suffer their second defeat. Craig MacRae's team's eight-match unbeaten run (six wins, two draws) ended with a 100-82 home loss to Western Bulldogs.
Before the loss to the Dogs, Collingwood was held to a draw by Fremantle Dockers in Round 11. The Magpies are currently outside the top eight on points differential and are eager to secure a spot in the qualifying positions after hovering around mid-table for most of the first half of the season.
Melbourne Demons, meanwhile, approach this matchup on the back of arguably their worst performance in years. The Demons suffered a humiliating 92-point defeat to Fremantle in the previous round, the biggest loss of coach Simon Goodwin's era.
Like Collingwood, Melbourne will look to break into the top eight and recover from last week's performance. They are slight favorites in this matchup because the Magpies have a short-handed squad.
Collingwood has won the last four meetings between the two sides. However, with several key players such as Mason Cox, Tom Mitchell, Jordan De Goey, and Scott Pendlebury out with injuries, the Demons could win this one.
