AFL Injury News: Western Sydney Giants left sweating over Darcy Jones' fitness following Saturday's defeat to arch-rivals
The Greater Western Sydney Giants (GWS) suffered an early setback in their Saturday clash with the Western Bulldogs. Promising small forward Darcy Jones was hit with an injury blow early in the match. The injury led to Jones being subbed out of the game in the first quarter, which proved to be a huge hit to their lineup, likely costing them the game.
Darcy Jones had gained possession of the ball and kicked it, after which he fell to the ground, holding his left thigh in visible pain. He was immediately subbed out and quickly received attention from the club’s medical staff before heading to the club's rooms.
GWS would later confirm on social media that Jones had suffered a hamstring injury and would be missing the rest of the match.
Though he was replaced by Conor Stone, his absence was felt through the remaining three quarters of the game. The Greater Western Sydney Giants would go on to lose the match (43-70), adding another defeat to their recent string of losses.
Darcy Jones is now being assessed for a hamstring injury that has left his team fearing for his health and his ability to play in future games. He will undergo a scan on Sunday that will provide more information on his condition. For now, his club and fans can only wait with bated breath and hope he makes a quick and full recovery.
Another shocking injury for promising small forward Darcy Jones
Darcy Jones is no stranger to injuries. The Western Sydney Giants first-round draft pick missed much of the 2023 AFL season after tearing his ACL while playing in the VFL in 2023. Prior to this injury, he had dealt with injuries to his shoulder and quad during the pre-season.
The 19-year-old was drafted by the Giants along with Harry Rowston and Aaron Cadman. He was taken with Pick 21 after putting up an incredible AFL Draft Combine display during which he won the vertical jump test and broke the agility test record.
Unfortunately, his short career in the AFL has been tainted by several serious injuries, and his recent injury from the Bulldogs match seems to be just another stroke of bad luck.
After missing most of his debut season due to injury, further injuries are the last thing Darcy Jones and the Western Sydney Giants would want. Hopefully, he is able to make a quick recovery and head back to the field. For now, we are waiting for more information about his injury and recovery process.
