Geelong Cats suffer blow as star forward faces time on the sidelines after injury against Carlton Blues - "He had to come off with a foot issue"
Geelong Cats triple premiership forward Tom Hawkins sustained an injury that forced him to exit Friday night’s game against the Carlton Blues at the MCG.
The injury resulted from an awkward leg placement that led to him crashing to the turf. The Cats along with dismayed fans watched Hawkins struggle as he limped off the ground in visible pain and frustration.
There are major concerns surrounding this injury with fans and analysts questioning the star forward’s ability to play for the rest of the season. The five-time All-Australian will undergo scans to determine the nature and severity of the injury.
Prior to sustaining this injury, the Geelong veteran had been dealing with a toe injury. Geelong coach Chris Scott spoke to Fox Footy reporters, saying,
“I’m not saying the news is good news, but I’m not saying the news is bad either. He (Hawkins) had to come off with a foot issue – it’s mid-foot – he has had an issue with his toe but it is a fair way away from that. The experts we have don’t know, so I certainly don’t have anything more to add.”
The two-time premiership coach quickly dispelled the idea that this could be Hawkin’s last game of the season, saying:
“They are not saying (that it might be season over) and I certainly don’t want to say anything that alleviates the concern because we are concerned, but I don’t want to jump to conclusions either.”
Geelong Cats suffer sixth loss as they go down against the Blues
The Geelong Cats were defeated for the sixth time this season. This series of losses could mean the Cats, who started the season on an incredible undefeated seven-game run, could fall out of the top eight for the first time this season.
They currently sit in sixth place and with Brisbane and Port Adelaide right behind them in the rankings, Geelong, in their current form, seem set to hit the ninth spot on the ladder by Round 15.
The Geelong Cats' next game will take place on June 29 against the Essendon Bombers.
