Top 5 greatest players in GWS Giants history

The GWS Giants haven't been around for so long, but with the impact they've had on the league, one might think otherwise. Founded in 2010, the club has managed to attract players with impressive skills and a dedication to the game.

Here, we celebrate five of the greatest players to ever play for the GWS Giants in their 14 years of existence.

5. Josh Kelly (2014-Present)

Co-captain of Greater Western Sydney, Josh Kelly is the only multiple-time winner of the Kevin Sheedy Medal in the club’s history. He was drafted by the GWS Giants with the second overall selection in the 2013 National Draft. Kelly had an outstanding 2017 as he finished fifth in the Brownlow Medal, won his first club’s Best and Fairest, and joined the All-Australian team.

Kelly has already played 205 games for the club and looks well on his way to achieving even more remarkable feats. Who knows, he just might make number one on a list like this in a few years.

The son of North Melbourne legend Phil Kelly, he looks uninterested in his “hereditary” club and as per his 2022 eight-year contract extension, the 29-year-old just might spend his entire playing career as a GWS Giant.

4. Stephen Coniglio (2014- Present)

When it comes to building winning organizations, the team players are critical. Stephen Coniglio has played a pivotal role in the growth of the GWS Giants. The West Australian was recruited into the club in 2011 via the national draft.

He established himself as one of the prominent premier game-breaking midfielders in the league. He has played 206 games, served as the GWS Giants captain from 2020-2022, won a Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award, and is now a vice-captain for the club.

3. Callan Ward (2012- Present)

A GWS Giants fan favorite, Callam Ward was the second player to commit to the club publicly, leaving behind the Western Bulldogs in 2012.

In the 12 years since his debut, the 34-year-old has been a vital force in the Giants’ development. Ward has played 303 games, 242 of which were for GWS. His accomplishments include GWS co-captainship (2012–2019), GWS games record holder, Kevin Sheedy Medal (2012), and 2009 AFL Rising Star nomination.

2. Jeremy Cameron (2012-2020)

Jeremy Cameron has a remarkable resume and one can only imagine how decorated it would be by the time he hangs up his boots. The key forward played for the GWS Giants from 2012 to 2020, then left for Geelong, but his time at the former club left a significant impact.

He led the club’s goalkicking in all the nine seasons as a Giant, booting 427 goals. He has two All-Australian honors, a Coleman Medal (2019), a Kevin Sheedy Medal (2013), AFLPA Best First Year Player Award (2012), and was part of the inaugural Giants team.

1. Toby Greene (2012- Present)

Arguably, no one (and we dare you to name someone else) has been able to generate as much interest – positive or negative – for the GWS Giants as Toby Greene.

One of the best players in the game at his peak, the dual All-Australian is one of the Giants' most loyal, which makes him even more deserving of this No. 1 spot.

The midfielder’s achievements include being GWS captain since 2022, three All-Australian team memberships, two Kevin Sheedy Medals, three Leading Goalkicker Awards, an AFL Rising Star Nomination, and being a part of the inaugural Giants team.
