Blue Lock Season 2 Episode 9, titled Snow Night, revealed the past of the Itoshi siblings as they were seemingly very close. Rin admired his older brother and started following in his footsteps to become the world's number 1 striker.

Unfortunately, going to Spain changed Sae as he no longer wanted to become the best striker but a midfielder. Rin could not accept this, causing a rift between the siblings. With that, Rin decided to continue playing football to destroy Sae Itoshi.

In addition, the anime also revealed how Sae Itoshi wished to abandon the match at half-time. However, Oliver Aiku convinced him to stay by agreeing to sub in Ryusei Shidou in the second half.
