Chainsaw Man chapter 186 all but debunks Fumiko Mifune Death Devil theories

Chainsaw Man chapter 186 was released on December 10, 2024, and marked round two of the Aging Devil vs. Pochita fight. Although the chapter entirely focused on Pochita's steady advance toward the Aging Devil, Fumiko's conduct during the chapter also contributed to debunking a major theory.

Fumiko Mifune was one of the most intriguing characters introduced in part 2 of the manga. Although her introduction essentially positioned her as Denji and Nayuta's handler, many fans had a theory suggesting Fumiko's identity as the Death Devil.

Chainsaw Man Chapter 186, which depicted Fumiko being completely subservient to the Aging Devil while suffering from its consequences, has almost completely debunked that theory.

Fumiko Mifune is one of the most mysterious characters ever introduced in the series. Although a mysterious character is a common sight within Tatsuki Fujimoto's works, Mifune seemingly lacks an actual concrete purpose or role within the story. Mifune was first introduced as both Denji and Nayuta's overseer. Later, she became the main representative of Public Safety.

There have been many theories around Mifune, few of which take into account the Horsemen Devils and deduce Mifune's identity as the Death Devil. A few other theories consider Mifune's clothing choices and rather odd demeanor, positing her as merely an avatar of Fami.

Fumiko Mifune being the Death Devil has been a longstanding theory within the Chainsaw Man fandom. However, her recent demeanor and actions in Chainsaw Man chapter 186 almost debunk that theory.

In Chainsaw Man chapter 186, Fumiko displayed a fanatical belief and subservience to the objective of feeding the Aging Devil to the Hero of Hell. This belief manifested in her entering a contract with the Primordial Devil.

This contract essentially sacrificed her organs to inflict damage on Pochita. Given that contracts are essentially stone-clad rules within the narrative, along with the fact that Fumiko seems to be taking genuine damage from the sacrifices, it is almost guaranteed that Fumiko is not the Death Devil.

Fumiko's belief in preventing the Prophecy of Nostradamus, as well as her readily agreed-upon contract, counteracts any possibility of her being an avatar of the Death Devil. It is still possible that the situation is part of an elaborate plan, but current evidence does not support the Fumiko being Death Devil theory.

It is still possible that the entire situation is an elaborate plot by Fumiko to somehow summon the Death Devil while getting rid of a few other primordial devils. Given that an avatar of the Death Devil could handle pain and damage without actual consequences, there is still a faint chance of Fumiko being the Death Devil.

Final thoughts

Chainsaw Man chapter 187 will be released on December 17, 2024, and will be available for reading on Shueisha's MANGA Plus platform. The story is currently focusing on the fight between the Aging Devil and Pochita. This battle is essentially a countdown to the Death Devil's prophesized descent. It is very much possible that chapter 187 debuts the Death Devil, as such abrupt devil debuts have happened before.
