Chainsaw Man chapter 187 teases Denji losing his humanity

Chainsaw Man chapter 187 finally shows Pochita facing the Aging Devil in the human world and Denji continuing to eat people in the latter's reality to heal his friend. This can mean a lot more than fans might think. While it can be a valiant effort to escape from this reality and a chance for Pochita to win against their enemies, it can also signify the protagonist's downfall.

Denji's mental state has always been a major topic across the series and Nayuta's death has seen him slowly descend into madness, evidenced by the nature of his current plan in the series. Chainsaw Man chapter 187 doubles down on his mental decline and this can be a path author Tatsuki Fujimoto is aiming for with this character as far as the most recent events are considered.

It is shown in Chainsaw Man chapter 187 that Pochita finally manages to fight the Aging Devil and begins to lose while Denji keeps eating Devil Hunters to heal his friend. This scene has been mostly perceived as heroic and brave because of the connection these two characters have. However, it also represents the protagonist's continuing downfall into insanity.

While Denji has always had a very unstable mental state, Nayuta's death was a breaking point for him after so many losses in the series. The recent events can be a point of no return for him. The way in which he eats the Devil Hunters in the Aging Devil's world can be a sign of desperation to get out and help Pochita, but it also shows his increasing animalistic tendencies.

There is another scene with Asa Mitaka and Yoru in the Aging Devil's world where he is dealing with a lot of regrets and sadness. It is normal to feel this way in his context but this scene also highlights the emotional inconsistency that he is displaying at the moment. It can be a sign that things are not going to end well for his character, which is a huge topic for the fandom at the moment.

Denji's ending is hard to predict, especially with the recent events in Chainsaw Man chapter 187, but most of the fandom doesn't think that he is going to get a happy conclusion. Author Tatsuki Fujimoto is currently writing a narrative that doesn't clearly depict what will happen to his protagonist.

From a thematic perspective, it is likely that Denji could get a happy ending, whether it is with Asa or on his own. It is simply because that would represent a certain progression for him. He started the series without anything and soon got Pochita by his side. So, if he ends in a similar state or even dies, this would mean that his journey was for nothing.

Final thoughts

Chainsaw Man chapter 187 starts with the main confrontation of this arc and also shows Denji's resolve, which can also be interpreted as insanity. It is difficult to gauge how the protagonist is going to conclude his journey in this manga, but there is no denying that his mental state is constantly declining.
