Chainsaw Man's Fumiko Mifune and Asa Mitaka may one key thing in common

Chainsaw Man is a series that currently has several mysteries, such as the nature and identity of the Death Devil, and one character who embodies that is Fumiko Mifune. While on the surface a normal Public Safety worker, there have been several theories in the fandom that she could be hiding a secret and a new one would draw a parallel with the coprotagonist of the second part, Asa Mitaka.

This theory implies that Fumiko Mifune has a union with the Famine Devil, Fami, in the same way that Asa has one with the War Devil, Yoru, in the Chainsaw Man manga. That has been constructed by the fact they have never been shown together, one appears when the other disappears, and some elements of Fumiko's character have similarities with the famine and hunger that define this Devil.

Explaining why Fumiko Mifune might be possessed by Fami in the same way Asa is by Yoru in Chainsaw Man

As mentioned earlier, one element that could prove Fumiko being possessed by Fami the same way Asa is by Yoru is the fact they have never been at the same place at the same time. Moreover, Fumiko's debut happened right after Fami disappeared and the former's recent cover in volume 19 has her tilting her head the same way the latter does it.

Other examples solidifying this theory are that Fami knew right away where to find Denji when he was in the Public Safety Denji Prison and Fumiko suddenly appeared after the Famine Devil had a meeting with Yoshida. Both have ties with some of the Primal Fears among the Devils, the Aging and Falling Devil, as evidenced recently in the manga.

Fumiko also works as a parallel for both Asa Mitaka and Denji, especially considering the connection they have with their respective Devils. Moreover, it would also make Fumiko serve as another Makima metaphor in the sense she also idolizes Chainsaw Man to a degree and could be manipulating the protagonist, just like the former Control Devil did in the first part.

More reasons to believe this theory

Another small detail that author Tatsuki Fujimoto added to Fumiko's character is that Miri refers to her as "a sushi woman" and the former has also stated that she never gets tired of "parfaits and sushi". This could represent the character's constant hunger, which could potentially be emphasized by the infamous introduction scene where she touched Denji, displaying a degree of s*xual appetite, although that is definitely a stretch.

Both Fami and Fumiko can disappear without any major explanation, which is something that further proves this theory. Moreover, when breaking Denji free from the Public Safety Devil Prison, the Weapon Hybrid attacks managed to cut out the entirety of the Public Safety agents except Fumiko, which implies that was by design since she was part of the team responsible for releasing the protagonist.

Final thoughts

Chainsaw Man has covered Fumiko Mifune in a lot of mystery and seems to be bound to be a major player in the outcome of this second part. While that can go in a lot of different directions, her being possessed by Fami would explain major plot points from the second part and also make a stronger connection with the events that have played out.
