Exploring Izuru Kira's fate in Bleach TYBW and how Mayuri Kurotsuchi saved him
Izuru Kira is among the many Soul Reapers who were the victims of the Quincies during the first Quincy Invasion. The 3rd Division Lieutenant was shot clean through by Bazz-B in a hopeless state.
However, later in the manga, Izuru appeared and demonstrated the powers of his Wabisuke Zanpakuto to eliminate the remnants of Lille Barro's flamingo-like clones that fell to the Seireitei.
Izuru Kira was akin to an undead person, with a gaping hole where his right chest should have been. He was disturbed by the loud screeches Lille Barro's clones were making. Undoubtedly, Izuru's return to the narrative may have shocked many fans. So, how did Izuru Kira survive in Bleach TYBW?
At the Beginning of the Revive of Tomorrow, a short novel by Ryogo Narita from the Bleach franchise's 13 Blade databook, which takes place sometime during Quincy's second invasion, it is revealed that Mayuri Kurotsuchi rescued Kira using a body remodeling technology.
After his fatal injury, Izuru was brought to Mayuri Kurotsuchi's research lab. He didn't have any pulse and was declared dead. However, Mayuri turned him into one of his test subjects. Even though Izuru didn't have a pulse, he desperately clung to his new life with a modified body.
According to the short novel, the 12th Division Captain stitched Izuru Kira's body using an iron rod and the souls of the departed Soul Reapers whose carcasses were scattered around his body. Since Izuru liked carrying others' burdens, Mayuri mocked him by saying he could inherit as much as he wanted.
The body remodeling technology amped Izuru Kira's powers to a great degree in Bleach TYBW, from increased Spiritual Pressure to physical strength & durability. Even though he was practically "dead," he still retained his resolve to carry his fallen comrades's burden and protect the Seireitei.
That's why Izuru Kira confronted Shaz Domino at the Beginning of the Revive of Tomorrow novel. The battle served as a "trial run" for Izuru and Mayuri to see how his modified, lifeless body held up. Undoubtedly, he rose to the occasion and showed why he was still a competent Soul Reaper despite losing everything.
Conclusion
Izuru Kira living as an undead is a testament to Mayuri Kurotsuchi's genius in Bleach TYBW. The 12th Division Captain ensured the Soul Society wouldn't lose a capable Soul Reaper.
Even though it was mostly because of scientific curiosity, Mayuri applied the body remodeling technology on Kira, the 3rd Division Lieutenant's resolve as Soul Reaper desperately clung to his new "Life."
