Fumiko Mifune may be Chainsaw Man Part 2's main villain, and volume 19 shows how

In Chainsaw Man Part II, Fumiko Mifune is quite an intriguing figure. A Public Safety Devil Hunter from Tokyo's Special Division 7, Mifune was tasked with protecting Denji from those who might know of his identity as Chainsaw Man. But fans will know how that went and the current state of events, which can be summed up in one word — chaos.

But even so, it is Fumiko Mifune herself who is strangely interesting. A recently surfaced theory in the fandom speculates that she might end up being Part II's main antagonist. Backing such a claim is her appearance on the outside and the inside of the volume 19 cover. Moreover, the theory speaks of her mannerisms that might just be hinting at her true identity.

Chainsaw Man volume 19 hints at Fumiko Mifune's true role in Part II

A recently surfaced theory in the Chainsaw Man fandom paints Fumiko Mifune as the potential main antagonist of Part II. Intriguingly enough, creator Tatsuki Fujimoto has been careful to reveal minimal information on this character, further fueling the theory. This theory is backed by Mifune's appearance on the cover of volume 19, both inside and outside.

The theory states that only Mifune and Fami (volume 14) appear to stare directly at readers in their respective covers. It further labels Mifune as "odd" and possibly Fami herself, drawing parallels between Mifune and Fami. In essence, both characters share similarities, such as their hairstyle, head tilt, and obsession with Chainsaw Man.

Moreover, Mifune was the one who brokered the deal between Public Safety and the Aging Devil. As seen previously, Fami can influence Primal Fears, like the Falling Devil. So, Mifune could either be Fami's puppet or Fami herself in some regard.

The theory even goes on a limb to state that Mifune's apparel choice, i.e., to expose her belly button. It is another sign of her link to Fami, given that the stomach is where food is stored, and Fami is the Famine Devil.

The part about Mifune's choice of clothes and her choice to expose her belly button in the theory might be a stretch. This might just be Fujimoto's decision in Mifune's character design, wanting a modern look for the girl as she is quite young and likely has nothing to do with her link to Fami.

Now, to the main bit, the theory does make some sense. But then again, the question arises about why Fujimoto portrays them as different individuals. Granted, they do possess some similarities, but their overall personality is quite different. Mifune is an upbeat woman with a constant smile and an odd pervertedness.

Meanwhile, Fami is cold, calm, near-emotionless, highly intelligent, and goal-oriented. They seem to be nothing alike in these terms. Again, the drive behind their obsession with Chainsaw Man is also different — Fami wants to use the Hero of Hell to stop the Prophecy of Nostradamus, and Mifune initially despised Chainsaw Man (for not saving her parents) before empathizing with him as he was nothing but a teenager.

These facts create a divide between Fami and Mifune. While their designs and mannerisms are similar, their motivations don't seem to align all that much.

Final thoughts

This is yet another interesting theory that takes its place in the library of already formulated theories. While it does have plausibility, several points can be refuted. Fumiko Mifune is quite an intriguing character, and the lack of information about her makes her even more so. Although in a supporting role, her actions eventually had an impact on the overall story.

Fujimoto keeps his lips sealed about her, which indicates that she still has a part to play in Part II. Her hand in the Public Safety-Aging Devil contract brings out a psychotic and sadistic side to her, which will likely be explored in the future. But for now, Fujimoto holds all the cards about Fami and Mifune's ties, if any, and the ultimate villain of Part II, i.e., potentially the Death Devil.
