Hidden detail proves Devil Fruits' origins in One Piece was obvious all along
One Piece's devil fruits have been one of the most mysterious power systems introduced in the last decade. Although these fruits have been present in the story since the first chapter, their actual mechanisms and origin remain elusive, with mere hypotheses serving as acceptable explanations.
Vegapunk is one of the few characters actively trying to uncover the origins of the devil fruits, only to arrive at and settle on a hypothesis. Vegapunk's hypothesis suggests that devil fruits are a manifestation of people's hopes and desires centered around the things they wish they could do.
Although this remains a mere hypothesis, the minute and rather hidden detail that many fruits function without significant downsides to their abilities supports it. Given that no one considers downsides or side effects when imagining powers, it is almost confirmed that devil fruits are functionally derived from dreams.

One Piece: The devil fruit's behavior credits Vegapunk's devil fruit origin hypothesis
Devil fruit powers work very similar to conventional superpowers — neither account for the downsides or logical explanations. This is evident in both Akainu and Ace's cases, where their clothes and other worn articles do not burn away despite the nature of their powers. Even in the case of Zoan fruits, like Kaido's, his clothing stays unaffected even after his transformation into a dragon.
Few fruits also exhibit qualities that simply should not be present per their definition. A glaring example is Twinkle-Twinkle Fruit, which allows users to turn their bodies into diamonds. Although this allowed Diamond Jozu to raise his defense incredibly and essentially serve as a tank, such a thing is not possible for diamonds.
Diamonds are incredibly resistant to scratching, which is the criteria used to measure "hardness." However, diamonds are not difficult to break or damage under blunt force. Even when Shinobu used her devil fruit to accelerate Momonosuke's age into adulthood, his clothes grew with him while disregarding his nutritional needs.
All of these indicate that the devil fruit powers are too much in the realm of fantasy and mostly function without drawbacks. Given that any conceptualization of powers by humans is done without thinking of any drawbacks, it is almost guaranteed that these devil fruits are somehow manifested from people's imagination and dreams.
This might also explain how fruits connected to figures of faith boast unimaginable power. This is exemplified by Nika, who is an actual god in the series. The fantastical interpretations of eastern dragons and other such entities will also explain the powers of their devil fruit, which manage to elude even the slightest logical explanation.
Final thoughts
One Piece chapter 1134 will be released on December 22, 2024, and will continue the Elbaf arc, which might also provide more insight into the functioning of devil fruits. Given that Elbaf is apparently holding a "legendary devil fruit," it is possible that it might be one of the first few devil fruits ever found, especially considering the giants' lifespan.
