Latest One Piece theory on Luffy's dream fits perfectly with his in-series role

Luffy's dream might be one of the biggest controversies in One Piece given the reactions of the Straw Hat Pirates. While most of the things the central protagonist said are "ridiculous" in the true sense, what could be his dream that had mixed reactions from his crew? As the responses indicate, the dream of the Straw Hat Pirates' captain might be as ridiculous as imagination could get.

Luffy's dream might be to steal the ocean (the water surrounding the lands on the Grand Line). This would fit perfectly with the current developments given how the world is sinking and a way to lower sea levels might also become possible. This would make Luffy's dream possible in its literal sense. Moreover, given how it's a secret, it creates a "wow" factor for the fans.

Exploring Luffy's dream in One Piece

In One Piece episode 1088 (one of the final episodes of the Wano arc where the Straw Hat Pirates were sailing towards their next destination), the news of Luffy's new status as one of the Emperors of the Sea was announced. Moreover, some other big names mentioned in the newspaper were making moves, one of which was Sabo's acquisition of killing King Cobra.

Luffy couldn't believe it and stated that Sabo was innocent because the latter only wanted to set everyone free. He then relived the memory of when he pledged his dream before his brothers (Sabo and Ace) and told his crew about it too. To Luffy's surprise, everyone was surprised to learn about their captain's dream. Ironically, Luffy had never told them about his dream so this was the first time.

So, what was Luffy's dream that left some of his crew members dumbfounded? The dream of the Straw Hat Pirates' captain might be to "steal the ocean." This would also fit the reactions of Luffy's crewmates as Jinbe and Nami were serious, Brook, Franky, Sanji, and Chopper were laughing, Usopp was angry, and Zoro was happy.

While there is no logical way to explain why Luffy would want to do something so ridiculous, it might be his instinct as a pirate (as they steal) alongside his desire to become the King of the Pirates.

Moreover, given the recent developments where Vegapunk revealed that the Grand Line was sinking, Luffy's crew might look for a way to lower sea levels. The sea levels might eventually lower to a drastic level, picturing the dream of the Straw Hat Pirates' captain who wanted to steal the ocean.

This would also fit the sense of Roger's dream (that was the same as Luffy, as stated by former Roger Pirate Shanks) because when the Pirate King proclaimed his dream before his crewmates, they also had mixed reactions like the Straw Hats.

Analysis and final thoughts

Ironically, the theory is so ridiculous that it might seem credible to Luffy's in-series role as a pirate. Moreover, this dream might also define the "pirate king" the series' antagonists want to become.

Blackbeard also wants to conquer the ocean but he might be more centered toward the land portion (as the big names of the crew are devil fruit users). So, Luffy's dream might also be a way to defeat his enemies in a very poetic way.
