Exploring why Makoto Yukimura's comments on Vinland Saga manga's ending
On Friday, December 20, 2024, Makoto Yukimura posted a series of tweets on his official X account (@makotoyukimura) to update fans about his ongoing manga. According to Yukimura's comments, the Vinland Saga manga will end its serialization on Kodansha's Afternoon Magazine soon.
Makoto Yukimura's update on the series' ending immediately came after he announced that the manga will be on a hiatus and won't be featured in the magazine's next issue (February 2025), which will be shipped from December 24, 2024. The author assured fans that he's not ill but rather couldn't publish the next chapter because he missed the deadline.
Regarding the manga's ending, Yukimura-san hasn't exactly revealed a date. However, his comments give the impression that the end is nigh. Makoto Yukimura's comments in Japanese, when translated to English, read as follows:
"The serialization of Vinland Saga will end soon. But! Well!, I know I'm complaining after the hiatus, but...it's hard to end a story! Come to think of it, I've only drawn the final episode once. This is the second time. It's really amazing that my predecessors were able to finish long serializations right to the end. I respect them for that alone."
Yukumira-san continued:
"I aim for all readers to close the book thinking, 'I'm glad I read it,' but I guess there's no ending that satisfies everyone. People are different, after all. But I will try my best with an ending that suits this story."
As evident from the author's comments, Yukimura-san has already started planning how to end the series on a high note. However, he realizes it's not possible to create a satisfying scenario for everyone, even though it's exactly what he envisions to accomplish.
Besides that, Yukimura-san has mentioned his struggle to end the narrative. He respected the other mangakas, who could finish the long serialization of their manga to the end. At any rate, Makoto Yukimura has assured fans that he will try his best to think it through and come up with a proper ending to the story.
Notably, this is not the first the time author mentioned that his manga is ending. On April 13, 2024, the author tweeted to reveal that his Vinland Saga manga's ending wasn't far away. Therefore, his latest comment on the manga's status further drives his point home.
Before Vinland Saga manga, Makoto Yukimura wrote and illustrated Planetes, a Sci-Fi manga series on Kodansha's Morning magazine from January 1999 to January 2004 for 27 chapters collected in four volumes.
The ongoing series commenced its serialization in April 2005 on Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine. A year later, the manga was shifted to Monthly Afternoon, which is aimed at young adult men (Seinen).
