Momoshiki might reappear only to keep Boruto from ever returning to Konoha

The key aspect differentiating Boruto from Naruto is the power scaling that shifted from jutsu to Shinjutsu techniques. Moreover, another key element to this might be that the former series is getting much darker than the latter one, given the current lore development. All of this might be centered around the protagonist's return to Hidden Leaf Village.

As explained by the protagonist, he now had no control of Momoshiki and if he activated his karma, he might lose it. Moreover, as the elders of the Hidden Leaf Village were also adamant about eliminating the protagonist, they might soon send a squad after him. This might lead to the protagonist eventually using Karma and resulting in the massacre of Hidden Leaf shinobi, making his return impossible.

Why Momoshiki reemergence might trigger every red flag for Boruto

In the last few chapters of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Kawaki framed the protagonist after Eida's Omnipotence Shinjutsu Technique. Not only did this rob the protagonist of his status as the son of the Seventh Hokage, he was branded as the murderer of Naruto Uzumaki. Due to this, he had to flee from the village. Fortunately, Sasuke accompanied him.

Returning to the village, the protagonist was different as he had the potential of a powerhouse, given his fight against Code. Moreover, as seen in the later chapters of Two Blue Vortex, the protagonist's prowess over his jutsu technique was enough to overpower heavenly beings like Hidari (a God tree). However, he didn't utilize his Karma once.

The reason behind this was revealed in Boruto Two Blue Vortex chapter 15. The protagonist explained to Kawaki how he had no control over Momoshiki anymore and the next time he triggered the activation of the Otsutsuki, he might go berserk and destroy everything around him. So, the logical thinking behind this would be to avoid using Karma, but things might not work as simply as stating it.

In the past, the protagonist triggered his Karma powers only during dire conditions. The prime example was after the fight against Isshiki as the protagonist had close to no chakra to resist Momoshiki's control. Even though he might be more mature than before, things might not turn south. One such future encounter might be a future fight between the protagonist and some Hidden Leaf shinobi.

After the fight against the God Trees, the protagonist was caught and brought before the Hidden Leaf elders. Without any filer, the elders stated they wanted him dead. Even though the protagonist fled, the elders might send a team of jounin to assassinate the protagonist. Even though the protagonist is strong, he might get overpowered by the experienced shinobi and this might trigger his karma.

Momoshiki would return to the series and this time, the protagonist might not be able to overpower him. Momoshiki would proceed to kill every Hidden Leaf shinobi and this might brand the protagonist as a criminal, after whom all the villagers might go. This might make the protagonist's return to Konoha (Hidden Leaf Village) near impossible.

Final thoughts

The return of Momoshiki might be a turning point in the series given how it could be considered his literal rebirth. This might make the life of the protagonist much worse than before and would also waste all of his efforts to make amends. However, given the speculative nature of this article, take it just as a form of entertainment.
