A misunderstanding led them to never see each other again. Reiko waited for her return and proceeded to give up. A few days later Soko made it to the same spot, and she waited for Reiko to return. Soko eventually died and the Yokai’s story concluded. Natsume nullified the contract and freed the Yokai from her book.
