Horikoshi confirms working on his next series after My Hero Academia in latest interview

Wednesday, December 4, 2024, saw a new interview with My Hero Academia mangaka Kohei Horikoshi posted to Marvel’s website, where Horikoshi confirmed the status of his next series. Per the interview, Horikoshi confirmed that he has “slowly started writing and drawing the thumbnails” for his next manga, and wants to “start a new manga as soon as [he] possibly can.”

This news is particularly exciting, as it marks the first confirmation that Horikoshi is indeed actively working on a new manga series since the conclusion of his flagship series. Likewise, Horikoshi’s words and progress update on where he’s currently at with the new series all suggest that it’s coming sooner rather than later.

Horikoshi’s latest interview confirms My Hero Academia mangaka’s intent to produce more manga

In addition to confirming that he will write and draw his next manga series, Horikoshi also discussed other paths he thought to take moving forward in his career. The mangaka explains that he originally wanted to just draw his next project and let someone else write the story, but reveals that his editor advised against this. Horikoshi claims that the editor’s advice was essentially that the final product would be better if Horikoshi did it all himself.

This leads to Horikoshi’s comments on where he’s at with working on the new series, caveating it with the need to continue supporting My Hero Academia for now. He claims this is due to “several events left surrounding MHA, so for a while [he’ll] still be committed to supporting and promoting it.” In other words, it seems that work on the new series will come only after these “several events” have come and gone.

However, these are likely relatively few, with one of the most likely being the upcoming Jump Festa ‘25 event. This will be the first of Shueisha’s in-house anime conventions since Horikoshi’s manga concluded, certainly making the series’ presence here special.

Beyond this, there’s also the confirmed eighth season of the mainline television anime series, as well as any potential franchise films in the works behind the scenes.

Even so, it’s likely that fans will get significant news on Horikoshi’s next series sometime in the 2025 calendar year. It’s even somewhat likely that the new manga begins serialization sometime in 2025, which would be a remarkable turnaround considering his flagship series ended in August 2024.

However, this is still speculative, with no confirmed news on Horikoshi’s series beyond its production available as of this article’s writing.

Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia manga series began serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in July 2014, running for just over ten years until August 2014. The manga’s 431 chapters have been collected into 42 volumes, with the 431st being a special extra issue made for the final volume. Studio BONES’ television anime adaptation of the manga is confirmed for an eighth season, which will likely be the last.
