Netflix announces December 2024 release date for Uzumaki anime in Asia

On December 3, 2024, Netflix announced the streaming of Uzumaki anime starting from December 20, 2024. The series concluded on October 19, 2024, after four episodes and was animated by studios Fugaku and Akarsuki.

Uzumaki anime is based on a manga series written and illustrated by Junji Ito. The manga series was published by Shogakukan (Japanese) and compiled into three individual volumes in both English and Japanese. Both versions also released an omnibus version of the manga series.

The promotional video released to announce Uzuamki's streaming on Netflix featured scenes from the anime series. Some of these scenes included an overall visual of Kurouzu-cho and eerie visuals of Shuichi's father and Kurotani Azumi.

The video concluded with the series' most disturbing visual, which was of Shuichi's father fitting him inside a large tub in the form of a spiral. The series is set to start streaming on Netflix on December 20, 2024. Originally scheduled for release in 2020, it was delayed until 2024 due to production issues.

The series was initially supposed to be animated by Studio Drive and Akatsuki, but the former studio's role was later taken over by a new studio, Studio Fugaku. Co-produced by Production I.G. and Adult Swim, the series premiered on the latter platform and was released online through the streaming service Max.

The anime is a horror-psychological series that takes place on a remote island where Kirie Goshima resides. In her hometown of Kurouzou-cho, the female protagonist witnesses eerie happenings, all involving a spiral pattern.

From the strange behavior of her boyfriend's father to the strange phenomenon happening, Kirie gets hints that she should not stay in her hometown for long. This suspicion is confirmed when Kirie's boyfriend, Shuichi, returns home and asks her to leave Kurouzou-cho as soon as possible. However, would the village let them escape?
