New Detective Conan anime film reveals April 2025 release date and more
Tuesday, December 3, 2024, saw the new Detective Conan anime film announce its Japanese release date of Friday, April 18, 2025, and more via its new official website. The website also revealed a new key visual for the film, drawn by Gosho Aoyama, the creator, author, and illustrator of the original manga series of the same name.
In addition to the above, the new Detective Conan anime film also revealed some loose plot details, key staff members, and certain characters to expect to play a role in the movie. It was also confirmed that the film will be revealing even more information this Thursday, December 5, via the aforementioned new official website.
New Detective Conan anime film set in Nagano prefecture hits Japanese theaters on April 18, 2025
As mentioned above, the new Detective Conan anime film also revealed a scant amount of additional information. Firstly, the film will be set in the Nagano prefecture, specifically in its snowy mountains. This can be seen via the visual, which features Conan riding a snowboard in its center. The visual also shows additional characters who will be present in the film, such as Yamato, Kogoro, Taka’aki, and Yui.
Yamato is an inspector in Nagano who has an injured left eye, while Kogoro is a major character in the series whose last major role in a franchise film was in 2005. This was the year of the franchise’s ninth film, titled Detective Conan: Strategy Above the Depths. Taka’aki and Yui are also from Nagano like Yamato, hence their involvement in the film’s events. Yamato is in the bottom left, with Kogoro in the top right, Taka’aki in the bottom right, and Yui in between Yamato and Taka’aki.
Katsuya Shigehara is directing the new Detective Conan anime film at TMS Entertainment, with Takeharu Sakurai writing the script. Both have worked on previous franchise films. The new movie is fully titled Meitantei Conan: Sekigan no Flashback, which translates to Detective Conan: One-Eyed Flashback. The title likewise suggests that Yamato will play a major role considering his status as an inspector in Nagano and his left eye being injured.
The most recent franchise film was April 2024’s Hyakuman Doru no Michishirube, which translates to The Million-dollar Pentagram. The film ranked at #1 in box offices in its opening weekend, with 2,274,333 tickets sold and 3,352,4949,500 yen (roughly US$21.7 million) in its first three days in theaters. The latest film is also the highest-grossing in the franchise, beating 2023’s Kurogane no Submarine, or Iron Submarine.
Aoyama’s original manga series first began serialization in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine in January 1994, where it is still ongoing today. The manga has been collected into 106 total compilation volumes, 92 of which are available in English.
