Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- anime film debuts in top 10 in USA

Monday, December 9, 2024, saw Sony Pictures report the Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- anime film’s estimated earnings throughout its opening weekend in United States theaters. These reports excitingly put the film as entering the United States box office at #7 for its opening weekend, certainly a remarkable achievement for a Western theatrical release.

This achievement is especially impressive when considering that the Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- anime film was only screened in 846 American locations. It’s unclear how this momentum will last as the film remains in theaters, but at the very least, the compilation anime film has had an excellent opening weekend abroad.

Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- anime film earns more than $2 million at United States box offices

Sony Pictures’ latest estimates for the Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- anime film’s earnings are currently set at US$2.4 million total across the entire opening weekend. This further breaks down to an estimated $1.090 million on Friday, an estimated $765,000 on Saturday, and an estimated $545,000 on Sunday across 846 locations. These estimated earnings were good enough to give the film the seventh rank in the United States’ weekend box office.

In addition to these numbers, the film also earned an estimated $1.1 million in its other international screenings, which included Canada. This puts the film’s international earnings outside of the United States at $1.7 million, and worldwide earnings outside of Japan at $4.1 million. Crunchyroll acquired the North American and select international rights for the film, screening it in North American theaters with Sony Pictures on Friday, December 6, 2024.

The Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- anime film began screening in Japanese theaters on Friday, November 29, 2024. The film is a compilation recap of the mainline television anime series’ first season, which eventually transitions into the first two episodes of the upcoming second season. The second season will premiere sometime in January 2025, exactly one year to the month after the anime initially premiered with its first season.

Fully titled Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow-, Crunchyroll has already confirmed that it will stream the sequel series. It is also expected, but not confirmed, that Crunchyroll will later produce and stream an English dub for the series, having done so for the first season as well. The English dub was on a two-week delay relative to the original series, which is typical of Crunchyroll’s dub productions and may also be the case for season 2.

The original Solo Leveling Manhwa is itself an adaptation of author Chugong’s original web novel series of the same name. This original format ran from July 2016 to October 2018, with the webtoon from Chugong and illustrator Dubu (Jang Sung–rak) serialized from March 2018 to December 2021.
