Shonen Jump's 2024 review banner proves Kagurabachi is the true successor of My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen

The Kagurabachi series has had a peculiar rise in fame and popularity compared to contemporary shonen stories. While the story first gained a reputation for being overly generic with a rather peculiar art style, it soon gained a dedicated fan following throughout the release of its 61 chapters.

Before Kagurabachi, My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen reigned as the pillars of Shonen Jump. The latter two series marked their conclusion in 2024, leaving a significant void that only Kagurabachi could fill. Kagurabachi filling the void left by both pillars was indeed a contended topic. This was dispelled recently with the inclusion of Chihiro in Viz's "Shonen Jump 2024 Year in Review" banner.

Kagurabachi is on track to fill the void left by My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen

Takeru Hokazono's Kagurabachi series debuted in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine on September 19, 2023. While the story in its earliest chapters wasn't remarkable enough to make the series stand out from its competitors, the manga started trending due to various memes surrounding it.

The memes were mainly targeted toward the manga's rather generic revenge action plot, with many within the anime fandom ironically hyping up the series. Although it cannot be directly quantified, the onslaught of memes contributed to the manga's overall popularity. It kept readers engaged to a point where the story became cohesive and enjoyable.

While the manga reached levels of popularity previously deemed unattainable for it, series like My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen held bigger parts of the anime and manga fandom. My Hero Academia marked its end on August 5, 2024, with Izuku becoming a U.A. Teacher. Meanwhile, Jujutsu Kaisen ended on September 29, 2024, with everything returning to normal and the main trio reuniting.

Although both endings received a lukewarm reception, with many deeming them outright "bad endings," their conclusion marked a huge void within the anime and manga community. Takeru Hokazono's series allegedly filled this void.

Takeru Hokazono's series' fame and popularity were met with speculation about its legitimacy. Manga outlets like Viz Media recently included Chihiro alongside Deku, Yuji, and Luffy in its most recent banner. This move propped up the relatively new series as a serious contender for the next pillar of Shonen Jump while making its popularity legitimate.

Final thoughts

The entire narrative and story of Kagurabachi are relatively new, with the worldbuilding and lore-building being in their budding stages. The manga has 61 chapters, with chapter 62 scheduled for release on December 22, 2024.

While it is clear that Takeru Hokazono's series is being propped up as a successor to the My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen series, it is yet to reach the popularity boasted by the latter two series.
