Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- review: A recap done right

Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- is set to hit Indian theaters on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. Following the success of the anime's first season, A-1 Pictures decided to cash in on an omnibus movie to build up hype for the upcoming second season. Surprisingly, among all anime films following a similar pattern, Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- might be the best.

While A-1 Pictures' production quality was undoubtedly great, what stood out even more was the film's narrative direction as it helped set up the anime's second season.

With that in mind, let's take a deep dive into Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- movie to analyze what the finished product looks like and whether it is worth the watch. The review will cover aspects such as narrative, production quality, cast performances, and more.

Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- movie's narrative direction makes it a must-watch for fans

As anime fans must have noticed, almost every other "big anime" has now started to follow Demon Slayer's format of releasing movies between seasonal television anime. While some anime adapts a spinoff manga or part of the series into a movie, others release an omnibus film to promote the next season.

These "omnibus" movies are not as well-received by fans as other movies. This is due to a lack of original content. However, what A-1 Pictures did with Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- is noteworthy. Unlike other anime that include the final episodes of the previous season as part of the movie, A-1 Pictures added a recap of the entire first season.

While this means that about two-thirds of the movie is filled with content that fans may have already watched, A-1 Pictures' narrative decisions will leave no room for complaint. This is because the movie beautifully recaps the events from the first season in an action-packed way. Hence, the recap should leave fans wanting to see more of Sung Jinwoo's journey without a hiccup.

Therefore, amidst all other omnibus movies, Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- might be the best and should be regarded as a great example for anime planning to produce similar movies.

Introduction to Solo Leveling season 2 -Arise from the Shadow-

As for Solo Leveling season 2, the anime movie previews its first two episodes. Surprisingly, the anime does not build up to it but switches seamlessly. Hence, it is difficult to say whether A-1 Pictures edited out some scenes from the first two episodes or added them untouched.

That said, while Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- succeeds in building up hype for the upcoming anime, the early preview part could effectively diminish fans' interest at the start of the anime's premiere in January 2025.

Production quality and cast performances

Following the first season's success, A-1 Pictures did not back down on the second season, as the production quality in the early preview of the movies looked exceptional.

The first noticable thing in the early preview is the change in Sung Jinwoo's character design. The E-Rank Hunter has now finally taken on the look manhwa fans have known him the most for, and as expected, A-1 Pictures delivered it beautifully.

As for the production quality, A-1 Pictures again delivered stunning animation. Not only was Sung Jinwoo animated fluidly, but so were Igris, his shadows, Barca, and his ice elves. With that, the anime adapted an incredible fight that saw the Hunter take on the Red Gate and defeat the monsters inside it.

As for the cast performances, the anime introduced fans to several supporting characters in Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- but the two that stood out the most were A-Rank Hunter Kim Chul and the Leader of the Ice Elves Barca. The two characters were voiced by Chikahiro Kobayashi and Sato Ryuji, both of whom gave short-lived yet wonderful performances.

Final thoughts

While two-thirds of the Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- movie is rehashed content from the anime's first season, it is certainly a must-watch for fans. The movie showcases a recap of the entire season, not just the finale, building hype for the second season.

Moreover, the movie can also be watched by new fans as there is only a little to miss if one watches the film before the first season. Hence, Solo Leveling -ReAwakening- could also be a good way for fans to get other friends hooked on the series. Watch the film when it hits the theaters this Wednesday, November 4.
