Who created Majin Buu in Dragon Ball? Daima's recent retcon, explained

Dragon Ball fans wonder who created Majin Buu since the recent information in the Daima anime has generated a lot of doubts within the community. Moreover, there have been interviews where author Akira Toriyama stated that Buu's origins were quite different from what was shown in the original series, sparking a lot of debates.

It was originally stated in Dragon Ball that Majin Buu was created by Babidi's father, Bibidi, but Toriyama later confirmed that this being has existed since time immemorial. Now Daima has revealed that he was created by a witch named Marba. The most recent revelation should be taken as the canon one.

The most recent episodes of Daima revealed that Dr. Arinsu was on Earth when Vegeta sacrificed himself to destroy Majin Buu, with the former grabbing one of the pieces of the evil creature. In the present day of the series, Arinsu is seen talking with a witch named Marba, to help her create a new version of Buu, with the Glind confirming that this lady was the creator of that Majin.

This revelation not only retcons the origins of Majin Buu but also shows that there is a specific process to create one. That is how Majin Kuu came to be in the most recent episode of Daima, highlighting that the franchise continues to add more lore to this day, although that has been divisive within the fandom.

It was confirmed by the Supreme Kaioshin in the saga that Majin Buu was created by Babidi's father, Bibidi, who was a powerful wizard in his own right. This was eventually contradicted by Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama in an interview when he confirmed that Buu was a being who existed from time immemorial, which establishes the first major retcon involving this character.

It is also worth pointing out that the Supreme Kaioshin mentions how the fat Majin Buu was exactly how he remembered it, and then confirms that Kid Buu was the original form, without informing Goku and Vegeta about it. There is an argument to be made that he thought that information wasn't important, but that could also be seen as a retcon.

The reason why a lot of Dragon Ball fans wonder who created Majin Buu is because Akira Toriyama has been retconning his origin throughout the years. There was no major inconsistency with the idea of Bibidi creating Buu, but the statement of the interview and Marba revelation in Daima, an anime with a story written by Toriyama, have only made this backstory more confusing.

There is an argument to be made that Toriyama perhaps wasn't satisfied with the idea of Buu being created by Bibidi, and wanted another origin for this character. However, this mangaka has always had a reputation for forgetting ideas and even characters, such as his infamous statement that he forgot about Launch, so this idea isn't out of the question.

Final thoughts

Wondering who created Majin Buu is a valid question in the Dragon Ball community after several retcons. However, when considering how every origin was penned by Toriyama, the last one in Daima should be considered as the canon one.
