Kirara's role in Jujutsu Kaisen, explained
When Yuji, Megumi, and Panda first encounter Kirara in Jujutsu Kaisen, they run an underground fighting club with a suspended Tokyo Jujutsu High student, Hakari. Kirara has shunned the Jujutsu world but is begged by Yuji and his friends to help them in the culling game.
In the Shinjuku Arc, their cursed technique was essential in protecting Ui Ui and keeping injured sorcerers safe from Sukuna. One of the reasons they were perfect for this task was due to their cursed technique, Love Rendezvous. While their contributions were not as much as Yuta or Yuji, they reduced the death count of sorcerers.
Kirara's Cursed Technique
Kirara in Jujutsu Kaisen has one of the most interesting cursed techniques. Love Rendezvous is not as overpowered/attack-based as Gojo's Limitless or Yuta's Copy; It is perfect for defending and evading attacks. Kirara used it to defend themselves from Megumi and Panda, it was also used in the Shinjuku showdown arc to protect other sorcerers.
Love Rendezvous, based on the Southern Cross constellation, assigns a star to any human, object, or entity. Once marked, they are confined to a specific pathway following the constellation's star order: Imai, Acrux, Mimosa, Ginan, and Gacrux.
Love Rendezvous's weakness lies in its lack of attacking power. In their battle with Panda and Megumi, they could barely muster an attack of their own. There is also the issue of range. The range of Love Rendezvous is severely limited and while it is not stated in the manga, the technique dispels once object or people leave the range.
Kirara's relationship with Hakari
This is the question most readers ask about Kirara in Jujustu Kaisen. Their relationship with Hakari is never said to be anything more than a friendship, but on some panels we see the two characters holding one another affectionately. These panels suggest an intimate relationship between the two characters.
Though Hakari's affection is not as overt as Kirara's, it is clear that he definitely likes Kirara. He makes each decision with Kirara and according to Panda, the two characters have always clung to each other. Hakari has also said he is straight in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, and if he is straight, he might not be in a relationship with the non-binary Kirara.
The manga shows how fiercely protective Kirara is of Hakari and this can be seen with both of them running an underground fighting club together and in Kirara's battle with Megumi and Panda. According to the entire Jujutsu Kaisen, the two characters are close friends.
Final Thoughts
Gege Akutami's portrayal of Kirara Hoshi in Jujutsu Kaisen stands out for introducing a non-binary character respectfully, avoiding comic relief stereotypes. They join other notable queer anime characters like Emporio Ivankov (One Piece), Hange Zoe (Attack on Titan), and Gren (Cowboy Bebop).
While Kirara's orientation is not explicitly stated, they remain a memorable character, known for their loyalty to Hakari during his suspension and their crucial role in the final battle against Sukuna.
