Wind Breaker chapter 164, titled Ties, commenced with Sugishita helping Umemiya plant new seedlings. After this, the chapter shifted to the former character's origins. Since childhood, Sugishita never liked talking or hanging out with other kids because he had his grandparents waiting for him at home.

His parent got divorced a few years after his birth so Sugishita's grandparents were the only ones who cared for the character. However, Sugshita's life changed when he punched a student for pulling a prank on him. This made him realize his potential and the emotions that were suppressed inside him. After this incident, Sugishita was entangled in fights with different delinquent groups.

As expected, he never gave his opponents a chance to escape and this gave him the reputation of being a dangerous kid. In one incident, Sugishita was cornered inside an abandoned facility. As he was thinking about his life choices, a high schooler entered the facility. Alongside Sugishita, everyone was also scared of this new high school kid.

The high school kid asked them why were they cornering a single kid. The gang members started playing the victim and stated that the kid was a rebel. Upon hearing this, the high school kid asked the gang members to leave them as he was now with Sugishita. The high school kid, revealed to be Umemiya, then approached Sugishita and asked for his name.
