Rio Olympics 2016 Live, Day 1, August 5th: Indian women archers disappoint in the ranking event

Indian archer Atanu Das in action at Sambadrome, Rio

The first 4 teams in the team event, get a bye to the quarter-finals stage while the teams ranked 5th to 12th will fight for the rest of 4 spots in the quarter finals. Therefore,  Team India (finished 7th ) will take on Colombia (finished 10th ) for a place in the quarter-finals!

In the Individual event, Deepika Kumari (finished 20th in the ranking event) will take on Georgian international Kristine Esebua (finished 45th in the ranking event) while Bombayla Devi (finished 24th in the ranking event) will take on Austrian international Laurence Baldauff (finished 41st in the ranking event) in the round of 64. The third Indian archer, Laxmirani Majhi (finished 43rd in the ranking event) will take on Slovakian international Alexandra Longova (finished 22nd in the ranking event) in the round of 64.

South Korean International Choi Misun finished at the top of the final standings with a colossal score of 669 points in the 12 sets while the Korean national women’s archery team finished at the top of the final standings in the team event with a score of 1998.

Is this all mental for the women's team? One minute they are flying high, the next they are down in the dumps. There's still hope for them, of course; archers have been known to win from worse positions. But the Indian women have done themselves no favours with their showing today.

Round 12:

Deepika finished at 20th place in the final standings with a score of 53 (10 10 9 9 8 7) and takes her total points tally to 640 whereas Bombalya Devi finished at the 24th spot in the final standings with a score of 54 (10 9 9 9 9 8) in the last set, takes her total points tally to 638!

Laxmirani Majhi finished at a disappointing 43rd place with a score of 51(10 9 9 8 8 7) in the last set, takes her total points tally to 614!

In the team event, India finished at 7th place with a combined score of 1892!

While Deepika is struggling to stay afloat in the top 15, Bombayala and Laxmirani are faring much worse, let's just say that after Atanu Das's unexpected heroics in the men's ranking event, the Indian women's performance has been highly underwhelming

It has been a sobering fall for Deepika from the highs of just a few rounds earlier. She was at the No.1 position at the end of the 5th round, but is now struggling to remain in the top 15! Is this a case of choking? it's still far too early in the competition to judge, but this isn't the first time Deepika is faltering on the big stage!

Round 11:

Deepika climbs up to 18th in the final standings with a score of 56 (10 10 10 9 9 8) in the eleventh round, takes her tally to 587 points whereas Bombalya Devi drops up to 23rd with a score of 53 (X 10 9 8 8 8) and take her tally to 584!

Laxmirani Majhi drops to 45th in the standings with a score of 48 (9 9 8 8 7 7) and takes her tally to 563!

In the team event, India climbs up to 7th place with a combined score of 1734!

Similarly, If Deepika finishes outside the top 8 in the ranking event, she could have very tough opponents from the Round of 16 onwards

NOTE: The ranking event is held to determine the seedings for the archery competition, the higher an archer finishes in the ranking event, the easier his or her opponent in the first few rounds

Welcome to the LIVE coverage of DAY 0 of the 2-week long extravaganza, Rio Olympics 2016 being held in the capital city of Brazil for the duration of 16 days between August 5th and August 21st .

We have a day full of Archery events taking place before the Opening Ceremony takes place later at the Maracana football stadium at 20:00 local time (04:30 IST, 6th August). The first round in the sport of Archery will consist of the men’s ranking event followed by the women’s ranking event to be played at the Sambadrome, situated 40 kms from the Games Village.

A total of 128 archers (64 men and 64 women) will take part in the ranking events on Day 1 which includes both team and individual events, in order to be seeded from 1 to 64 according to their scores. Every archer has to shoot 72 arrows, in groups of six, and the rankings are decided after the culmination of the round.

Archer with the maximum number of points is given the Rank 1 and so forth. The top-ranked player will face the 64th rank, 2nd ranked against the 63rd ranked and henceforth. The round-of-64 is followed by the round-of-32, pre-quarterfinals, quarterfinals, semifinals and the final.

Note: All the matches after the Ranking Round will be knockouts

Unlike the World Championships or the World Cups where there are separate events for Recurve and Compound, only Recurve Bows are allowed in the Summer Games. The bows used are specially designed to facilitate shooting for the Archer, as it consists of two limbs, a handle and bowstring, sighting accessories and stabiliser rods.

As far as the Indian participation is concerned, the 24-year old Atanu Das will take part in the Men’s individual ranking event whereas Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi will carry the hopes of 1.2 billion Indians while competing in the women’s individual as well as the team event!

The team events also work on a set system. However, instead of three arrows per set, there are six arrows per set. The point to note here is that teams shoot the arrows in groups of 3, i.e., a team of three players shoots three arrows, one per player, and then the other team repeats the process.

After both the teams are done with both the groups of three arrows, the team with higher score gets 2 set-points while the first team to accumulate five set-points wins the match.
