Indian sprinter Amiya Mallick to train under Usain Bolt's coach
21-year old Indian sprinter Amiya Mallick is set to be trained by sprint legend Usain Bolt‘s coach Glen Mills. The 200-metre sprinter from Odisha won the gold at the 53rd National Open Senior Athletics Championship in Ranchi this September in the process clocking 21.22 seconds, which led the Odisha Olympic Association to contact Glen Mills in Kingston, Jamaica.
“My association sent all the details to them in Kingston and after seeing my records here in India, they were ready to allow me to train there for four months under Mills. I will be at the Racers Track Club where he coaches Bolt and a host of others like Yohan Blake,” the 21-year-old sprinter said.
Mallick is set to become the first Indian to move abroad in the tutelage of a world renowned coach. Not only that, he will also have access to the core group of trainers and physios at Racers, which will help him to nurture and realize his immense potential.
Mallick, set to travel to Jamaica in the next two weeks has expressed his excitement, and realizes that this could be a career-altering journey for him, which could help him make the next level.
The Odisha Olympic Association’s initiative for sending athletes abroad to train made it possible for Mallick to travel to Kingston. They have previously sent Savari Nanda, 100 and 200 meter sprinter to visit Australia under the same program.
“We were checking on the internet for possible places to send Amiya and we stumbled upon Glen Mills’ management’s website. We applied there, sending them all the details, and we got a positive response a month later,” said Pramodha Mohanty, CEO of the OAA.
The biggest challenge faced by the OAA was to secure sponsors to generate the 8 lacks required for Mallick’s Carribean training.
