B&S Kurpfalz Gala: Jyothi Yarraji and Mohammed Afsal win gold; Tejas Shirse secures silver medal

Ace Indian hurdler Jyothi Yarraji continued her domination as she secured the women’s 100m hurdles gold medal at the B&S Kurpfalz Gala in Weinheim, Germany on Saturday, May 18.

On the other hand, Asian Games silver medallist Mohammed Afsal also clinched the gold medal in the men’s 800m race with a season-best time of 1:47.05 seconds. Tiarnan Crorken from Great Britain finished second, clocking 1:47.06 seconds.

Moving into the details, Jyothi Yarraji started by bagging a win in the first heat, clocking 13.36 seconds to make it to the final. She then clocked 13.06 seconds in the final to clinch the title.

Notably, this title victory was Jyothi's second in the women’s 100m hurdles this year following her win at the Harry Schulting Games earlier this month.

Furthermore, she also took part in the women’s 200m final, finishing second with a timing of 23.83 seconds, behind Marije Van Hunenstijn from Netherlands, who clocked 23.45 seconds.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Afsal clocked a season-best time of 1:47.05 seconds in his first outdoor international event of the year, edging to the second spot in the tally of Indians with best timings of the year, behind Parvej Khan, who clocked 1:46.12 seconds.

Tejas Shirse bags silver medal in B&S Kurpfalz Gala

Moving forward, in the men's 110m hurdles, Tejas Shirse settled for the silver medal with an impressive timing of 13.60 seconds, only 0.4 seconds short of his personal best.

Moreover, sprinter Amlan Borgohain started his season on an excellent note, clocking 10.66 seconds in the 100m sprint at B&S Kurpfalz Gala to secure a spot in the top five list of the fastest 100m sprinters in India this season.

Animesh Kujur continued his good form, clocking 20.96 seconds in the men’s 200m event to secure second position at the B&S Kurpfalz Gala.

On the other hand, the Asian U20 champion Pavana Nagraj was part of the women’s long jump event, registering a leap of 6.15m in the final. However, she achieved this leap on her first attempt and she failed to surpass it in the next few attempts and settled for the seventh position in the final tally.
