Diamond League Final 2024: Avinash Sable finishes 9th in men’s 3000m steeplechase event

Indian sprinter Avinash Sable finished ninth in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event at the ongoing Diamond League Final 2024 in Brussels, Belgium. The 29-year-old Indian athlete finished with a timing of 8:17.09.

It was some way off his personal best timing of 8:09.91, which he registered at the Paris Diamond League meet in July.

Meanwhile, 22-year-old Amos Serem of Kenya won the men’s 3000m steeplechase event with a timing of 8:06.90. It was an incredible performance from the young Kenyan, whose victory on Friday, September 13, was his first-ever win in a Diamond League event.

Paris Olympics 2024 gold medalist Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco had to settle for a silver medal, registering a timing of 8:08.60. Tunisian national record holder Mohamed Amin Jhinaoui came in third position with a timing of 8:09.68, just ahead of Paris 2024 bronze medalist Abraham Kibiwot of Kenya (8:10.51).

Friday’s event will likely be Avinash Sable’s last race in 2024. The athlete from Maharashtra will end the year on a disappointing note, having failed to win any major competitions.

Avinash Sable, a former Asian Games gold medalist, barely secured his qualification for the Diamond League Final 2024 event after finishing 14th in the overall standings. However, his performance in the Paris meet gave him three points, which assured him a place in Friday’s event.

Avinash will now end 2024 without any major wins besides his name, as he had also failed to secure a podium finish in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event at the recently concluded Paris Olympics 2024.
