"Go for high-altitude training" – Steeplechase legend Ezekiel Kemboi advises Avinash Sable
Ezekiel Kemboi, one of the greatest steeplechasers to have graced the game, has advised India’s Avinash Sable to go for high-altitude training in countries like Ethiopia and Kenya to build strength and endurance. The 30-year-old Sable recently took part in the Men’s 3000m steeplechase event at the Paris Olympics, but failed to make an impact after finishing 11th.
Sable won the silver medal at the Asian Championships back in 2019 after which he bagged another silver at the Commonwealth Games. Last year, he won two medals, a gold and a silver, in the Asian Games that took place in Hangzhou.
Kemboi said that Sable has time on his hands and invited the Indian athlete to train with him at his base.
"I think the Indian guy Sable, the steeplechaser, the boy is still young. He still has a lot of time. What I want him to do is to have some motivation for himself. To have a vision, to have a target. To target what comes in a year, like world championship, Olympics," Kemboi told PTI Videos.
"I also want to request if it could be possible for him to go to Africa... Kenya or in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for some intense training which will focus on building up his endurance so that he gets more power while running," Kemboi said.
"Just go for high-altitude training... because we have the best altitude for training in the regions of Kenya and Ethiopia for his body system to adapt to endurance,” Kemboi added.
Ezekiel Kemboi’s career in brief
Kemboi represented Kenya across multiple tournaments and made his mark around the world. Back in 2004, he won his maiden Olympic medal in the form of a gold. Four years later in London, he defended his title in the quadrennial event.
He has won four medals in the Commonwealth Games, including a gold, two silver and a bronze. The now 42-year-old also bagged seven medals at the World Championships (four gold and three silver).
