Tara Lipinski welcomes first baby with husband Todd Kapostasy via surrogate
Former figure skater Tara Lipinski and husband Todd Kapostasy welcomed their first child on October 25. The couple previously went through various ways of getting pregnant but nothing worked out for them. Ultimately, they resorted to surrogacy, which helped them become parents to a baby girl.
1988 Olympic Champion, Tara Lipinski and filmmaker Todd Kapostasy first opened up about their battle with infertility in the podcast titled “Unexpecting” in August. The 41-year-old former skater shared that she began her pregnancy journey in 2018 experiencing excruciating pain in order to conceive.
In recent years, Lipinski self-admittedly faced four miscarriages, four dilation and curettage procedures (D&Cs), six failed IVF transfers, and eight retrievals. The sports commentator was also diagnosed with endometriosis that required her surgery twice.
After a five-year battle with infertility, Tara Lipinski welcomed her baby girl, ‘Georgie Winter’ with her husband on Sunday. She broke the news on her Instagram sharing a picture of her child, also thanking their surrogate for bringing the little one to life. Lipinski wrote in her post:
"This little embryo that Todd and I made together has come to life! We are so grateful and forever thankful for our surrogate. Mikayla, thank you for carrying her safely into our arms," she wrote.
Nevertheless, in her latest interview with Today.com, Tara Lipinski expressed her happiness in becoming a mother. She said:
"My doctor had me playing my favorite song and I'm bawling because I think there was just so much relief of, 'Is this five-year journey over?'."
Furthermore, the former skater added:
"And then immediately, the baby is out, screaming, and on my chest and we're doing skin-to-skin and it was one of those moments like, 'How did my life just change so quickly and is this a dream? Because it feels like it.'"
Tara Lipinski and Todd Kapostasy first met in 2015
Tara Lipinski shares her married life with Todd Kapostasy, the director of The Pine Tar Incident: Making of Tar Wars (2017). The couple first met each other in 2015 at the Sports Emmy Awards where the skater was supposed to felicitate Kapostasy with an award.
In an Instagram post made in December 2015, the director said that the day after the Emmy Awards, he found out that his aunt was a good friend of Lipinski. The two worked apparently on the same project a few years back. Kapostasy added that he persuaded his aunt to make him meet the figure skater.
Seven months after the award show, the director proposed to the Olympic champion. The couple got married in 2017 at a grand wedding at Middleton Place in Charleston, South Carolina.
