BWF China Masters 2024 Day 3 Results: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty, Lakshya Sen through to quarters; PV Sindhu crashes out
After a promising start at the China Masters, the Indian badminton contingent stumbled today (November 21). As the nation's shuttlers' campaign came to a close in multiple different events, only Lakshya Sen and the men's doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty moved ahead to the quarterfinals.
India's day in Shenzhen got off to a shaky start when the mixed doubles pair of Sumeeth Reddy and Sikki Reddy pulled out of their Round-of-16 match against Chinese top seeds Feng Yan Zhe/Huang Dong Ping, after Sikki was diagnosed with food poisoning.
Next, Anupama Upadhyay took the court, fresh off her victory over World No.15 Beiwen Zhang on Tuesday. However, the youngster was unable to bring that same movement to the court today, and fell short to Japan’s Natsuki Ndaira with a scoreline of 7-21, 14-21.
The rest of the Indian women's singles team suffered a similar fate at the China Masters on Thursday. PV Sindhu lost to Singapore's Yeo Jia Min over the course of three games. This marked the Indian's first loss to the World No. 13 in six games. Meanwhile, Malvika Bansod was defeated by eighth seed Supanida Katethong in less than 30 minutes.
Elsewhere, Treesa Jolly and Gayathri Gopichand lost to Chinese second seeds Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning after a lukewarm display. On the other hand, giving Indian badminton fans something to cheer about was the pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. Back to action for the first time after the Paris Olympics, the former World No. 1s safely made it through to the quarterfinals after a straight-games victory over their Danish opponents.
Lastly, Lakshya Sen ended India's day on a high as he beat Rasmus Gemke 21-16, 21-18 in 46 minutes to book a berth in the quarterfinals of the China Masters.
