BWF World Rankings: Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy, and Satwik/Chirag drop spots in latest rankings
Indian badminton stars have had a decline in their rankings in the latest BWF World Rankings released on Tuesday (October 8). PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy, and the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty all dropped in their respective categories.
After a disappointing campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympics, many Indian shuttlers have yet to make their return to the court, and injuries have further delayed the comebacks of key players like HS Prannoy.
While Sindhu and Lakshya Sen are set to compete at the Arctic Open, Prannoy is currently on a break due to injuries and health concerns.
The Indian men’s doubles duo of Satwik and Chirag, who were expected to make their return at the Denmark Open next week, have withdrawn from the tournament, as confirmed by the BWF website. Meanwhile, Lakshya Sen is now the only Indian male player in the world top 20.
Lakshya Sen, following his steady performance, holds the position of world number 19 in the men’s singles category, making him the highest-ranked Indian male shuttler.
Despite being ranked 24th, HS Prannoy’s ranking is intact at world number 17 due to his ongoing recovery from injury. Among other Indian men in the top 40 of the BWF rankings, Priyanshu Rajawat is ranked 34th, Kidambi Srikanth sits at world number 38, and Kiran George is at 39th.
In women’s singles, two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu has seen a further drop in her ranking, now sitting at world number 16. Sindhu, who has had a challenging season, will be looking to regain her form at the Arctic Open.
India’s rising star, Malvika Bansod, who delivered a strong performance at the China Open, has managed to retain her position in the top 40, standing at world number 37. Anmol Kharb, after securing two titles recently, has made notable progress, breaking into the top 150 at world number 141.
Satwik/Chirag and Indian doubles teams' BWF rankings
In men’s doubles, the pair of Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who were ranked third after the Paris Olympics, have now dropped to world number seven. Their withdrawal from the Denmark Open could see their ranking slide further.
In women’s doubles, Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa remain the only Indian pair in the world's top 20, currently ranked 17th. Another promising duo, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand have maintained their world ranking at 21.
The Arctic Open and the upcoming Denmark Open will be crucial for Indian shuttlers as they aim to improve their rankings and regain momentum in the international circuit.
