3 reasons why the Yankees should try to land Tanner Scott before the trade deadline
Tanner Scott being traded to the New York Yankees is news that many in the Bronx are hoping will come true. Given the start the Yankees have had to the season, there's perhaps no better time to go all in for the World Series.
Scott is currently on a Miami Marlins contract, who are likely sellers come the trade deadline. With Scott having a nice year, the Yankees could bargain for him using precious prospects and future draft picks.
3 reasons why Yankees should trade for LHP reliever Tanner Scott
#3. Need a left-arm reliever
The left-arm high-end reliever is the need of the hour for the Yankees. Outside Caleb Ferguson, Victor Gonzalez and the June 20 signing of Tim Hill, the Yankees lack dependable left-arm pitchers. Tanner Scott could prove to be a perfect aid and significantly bolster the Yankees' bullpen that has faltered at times.
#2. Bullpen struggles
One of the reasons for the Bronx Bombers' cold streaks has been its bullpen, which at times has surrendered runs in crucial periods of the game. They certainly don't want that to repeat in the second half of the season when thing starts to matter more.
In such a situation, Tanner Scott's 1.42 ERA across 38.0 innings could come in handy. Also, the lefty relievers in the roster haven't been at their best. Ferguson has posted a 5.46 ERA while Gonzalez has a 3.86 ERA but with more walks (13) than strikeouts (11).
Moreover, the club's bullpen is 25th in ERA, 19th in batting average against, 24th in WHIP, 23rd in holds and 24th in fWAR since the end of May.
#1. Only a second-half rental
There's more at stake when the Yankees enter the next offseason. With them potentially shoring up money to save up for Juan Soto's contract extension, a short-term asset is more worth it now.
Scott is on a one-year, $5.7 million contract with the Marlins and will turn to free agency once the season concludes. That means he's a second-half rental who if not performing to their expected lines, won't hurt the club too much from a long-term view.
