5 Giants who are now free agents ft. Mark Canha
After another year of missing the playoffs (80-82), the San Francisco Giants have a few key contributors going out the door to free agency. They had six total players who were not under contract past 2024 or whom the team decided to move on from.
They will need to fill key roster spots and improve the team as a whole this winter. Depth is important, so the five players on this list and others will have to be replaced with someone.
Blake Snell would have been on this list, as he was the most notable outgoing player from San Francisco. However, in a surprising twist given how the last offseason went for Snell, he signed before any other notable players. He is off the market now thanks to the Los Angeles Dodgers and a five-year, $182 million contract with a little bit of deferred money.
Top Giants who are now free agents
5) OF Mark Canha
Mark Canha, whose contract expired at the end of 2024, was a trade deadline rental. He came over from the Detroit Tigers and is now a free agent after posting 0.6 bWAR and a .242 batting average. Canha has been one of the most valuable left fielder free agents over the last two seasons.
4) C Curt Casali
Curt Casali was worth 0.3 bWAR and hit .194 in 108 plate appearances last season. He had a disappointing 60 OPS+ and a low .543 OPS for the year. Casali is an 11-year veteran who has a career bWAR of 6.9, though.
3) OF Michael Conforto
Perhaps the most impactful loss, Michael Conforto's contract expired as well. The outfielder was worth 1.3 bWAR, the most among outgoing players not named Blake Snell this year. He slugged 20 home runs and had a very strong 116 OPS+. Conforto, like Canha, has been one of the most valuable players in this class of left-fielders, so he should have suitors.
2) LHP Ethan Small
Ethan Small was non-tendered by the Giants. Any player, regardless of service time or arbitration status, is a free agent if they're not tendered a contract by their team. Small has not pitched since 2023, but his overall stats in two seasons are -0.3 bWAR, 8.71 ERA, 2.61 WHIP, and 13 strikeouts in 10.1 innings pitched.
1) RHP Kai-Wei Teng
Kai-Wei Teng was also non-tendered, but he had also been previously designated for assignment. Either way, the Giants wanted to move on, and they did. In the pitcher's rookie season, he was worth -0.3 bWAR and had a 9.82 ERA. He only pitched 11 innings but had a 2.09 WHIP and seven strikeouts in those innings
