5 teams that had the busiest trade deadline ft. Rays, Dodgers and moreĀ
There was a lot of activity ahead of this year's MLB trade deadline on July 30. Several teams were able to add to their existing strong rosters while others were able to rebuild for the future with strong prospects and values gained.
Here's a closer look at the top five most active teams ahead of the trade deadline.
5 teams that were busy at the 2024 MLB trade deadline
#1. Miami Marlins
The Miami Marlins were expected to be one of the most active teams by the deadline and that is what transpired. Their fire sale saw them trading away A.J. Puk, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Bryan de la Cruz, Tanner Scott, Trevor Rodgers and Bryan Hoeing. The Marlins received a whole host of prospects in return.
Baltimore Orioles' Connor Norby and San Diego Padres' Robby Snelling stand out in this regard. It remains to be seen if they can develop them in the long run.
#2. Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers knew they had several gaps to fill before the trade deadline. Now, only a few teams will be as satisfied as them. They ended up gaining plenty of veterans who could directly target their rotation issues and bench strength.
Tommy Edman and Amed Rosario are expected to play all around the park as utility players while Michael Kopech and Jack Flaherty could be key pitching arm acquisitions.
#3. Tampa Bay Rays
Like the Marlins, the Tampa Bay Rays had their own fire sale. Even though they are just 3.5 games behind the last AL Wild Card spot, high-profile talents like Randy Arozarena, Zach Eflin, Rosario and Isaac Paredes departed the club.
The Rays subsequently received strong prospects like Junior Caminero and signed players with relative experience, the standout being Christopher Morel who they received in the Paredes deal.
#4. Baltimore Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles are out there to win and they showed that clearly during this deadline. Their five-man rotation added Zach Eflin, easily their biggest acquisition and Trevor Rodgers.
Add to that, they were able to answer some question marks in the bullpen by acquiring Gregory Soto from the Philadelphia Phillies. They also made full use of their strong farm system, trading away Connor Norby and Kyle Stowers.
#5. Toronto Blue Jays
The Toronto Blue Jays emerged out of the deadline as a team that was able to hold onto the core of their team while adding a lot of prospect value. They were smart in trading away players who were headed into free agency and acquired top prospects like Jake Bloss and Joey Loperfido in the process.
