Adam Wainwright: 18-year MLB career comes to an end
At the end of the 2023 season, Adam Wainwright announced his retirement from baseball after a long career that included 478 games, 2,202 strikeouts, three All-Star selections, and a World Series championship with his sole major league team, the St. Louis Cardinals.
"People keep asking me if I’m officially retired. Well, here is my official retirement paperwork that we turned in to the @Cardinals and @MLBPA. Retired? Absolutely, for all the best reasons. Will send more later. Love y’all," he tweeted.
However, instead of citing health issues or the chance to enjoy his $182 million career earnings, Wainwright stated in his formal retirement papers to MLB that he was leaving the game "because I got a puppy."
Before the October 1 season finale, the Wainwrights were given a Lagotto Romagnolo puppy by the Cardinals in a 35-minute ceremony, fulfilling Wainwright's promise to his kids that they would have a family dog after he retired from baseball.
