Alex Verdugo Landing Spots: 3 potential destinations for outfielder after rough season with the Yankees
It was not the year that Alex Verdugo was hoping for after joining the New York Yankees last offseason. Although he started strong for his new club, things quickly began to spiral, with some even questioning whether or not he should be in the lineup. While he did come through in the clutch at times, his 2024 campaign was mostly disappointing.
This past season could be defined by defensive blunders and inconsistent play at the plate. In 149 games, Alex Verdugo posted a .233 batting average with 13 home runs and 61 RBIs. He also posted a .647 OPS, which was the lowest of his career since becoming a full-time player.
Verdugo should have no issue landing a new contract in free agency. While he may need to settle for a one-year "prove it" deal, he could be an asset for clubs if he can bounce back from his poor 2024.
Here's a look at 3 potential landing spots for Alex Verdugo in free agency
#1 - Detroit Tigers
One of the clubs that is expected to bolster its lineup this offseason is the Detroit Tigers. After reaching the postseason, mostly on the backs of their elite pitchers such as Tarik Skubal, they need to improve elsewhere if they hope to make the playoffs consistently. Verdugo may not be a game-changer, but if he can bounce back, he could be a low-risk, high-reward signing.
#2 - Miami Marlins
The Miami Marlins essentially need help across the board. Enter Verdugo who could be an everyday contributor for them. He may not change their fortunes in 2025; however, if he can produce closer to his career norms, he would be a steal for Miami.
Back in his earlier days with the LA Dodgers and Boston Red Sox, Verdugo was an elite hitter who posted batting averages above .280 in five of his eight seasons. This is the type of player that the Marlins could utilize but they could also use him as a trade chip if the season gets away from them.
#3 - New York Yankees
The New York Yankees can also decide to bring Alex Verdugo back into the fold. The club is waiting to see what happens with Juan Soto and his free agency; however, if Soto signs with another team, the Yankees will still need to address their outfield.
Verdugo would need to improve at the plate to remain in the lineup consistently. He does appear to have a strong connection with other Yankees players and has expressed interest in returning to the club. If he can produce like he did to start 2024, Yankees fans may quickly welcome him back.
