Cardinals legend Chris Carpenter was once attacked by Zack Grienke for having a 'phony attitude'

In October 2011, All-Star Zack Greinke attacked St. Louis Cardinals legend Chris Carpenter for having a 'phony attitude'. Back then, Zack was playing with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Even though the Cardinals-Brewers rivalry in Major League Baseball is relatively new, the two NL Central rivals have a long history of animosity. Zack Greinke poured gasoline on the fire in 2011 to deepen the feud.

When reporters asked NLCS Game 1 starter Zack Greinke about NLCS Game 3 starter Chris Carpenter during a press conference at Miller Park, Greinke had some choice of words for Carpenter.

“A lot of guys on our team don’t like Carpenter. … His attitude out there sometimes is like a phony attitude," said Zack while speaking about Chris.

Tony La Russa, the former manager of the Cardinals, stepped up to support Carpenter, saying any team in the league, including the Brewers, would be glad to have Chris on their team.

Interestingly, former MLB pitcher Chris Carpenter gave a positive opinion about the Milwaukee Brewers. He spoke to reporters before Greinke made his comments and downplayed any suggestion that the two teams don't like each other.

"I don't think that's a fact. I think we have great respect for them. I hope they have the same for us," said Carpenter.

A year later, Zack was traded to the Los Angeles Angels in June 2012, while Chris went on to retire from MLB in November 2013. Greinke currently plays for the Kansas City Royals.
