Fans still not convinced that New York Yankees manager has the right lineup as Opening Day draws closer: "Donaldson as high as 5 makes my eyes bleed"
As Opening Day 2023 draws nearer and nearer, the New York Yankees are continuing to experiment with different players at different positions. Unfortunately, for manager Aaron Boone, fans are always quick to offer pointers.
A slew of injuries have threatened to throw a wrench into the Yankees' machine early in the season. Scrambling to find answers, Boone has resorted to making some interesting selections.
Ahead of their March 16th clash against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Boone unveiled the lineup for his 9-10 team. Although fans were pleased with some aspects of the lineup, there were also features that did not gain much popularity at all among observers.
"Yanks running out Judge in LF and Oswaldo in CF again," - Talkin' Yanks
Harrison Bader, who was acquired at last year's trade deadline from the St. Louis Cardinals, is in center field. This is giving Aaron Boone a chance to field some other options like 6-foot-7 rookie Spencer Jones, who has been compared to Aaron Judge in both stature and playing style.
In addition to Jones, 24-year-old Venezuelan utility man Oswaldo Cabrera has 2 home runs and 8 RBIs this preseason. Although Cabrera is getting the nod today against the Pittsburgh Pirates, 2022 shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa has also been floated as a potential replacement for Bader in center field.
Josh Donaldson is another player who continues to garner fan dissaproval. The former AL MVP came to the Yankees last season along with Kiner-Falefa from the Minnesota Twins. Despite the hype that surrounded Donaldson's arrival, the third baseman only hit .222 in 2022, drawing endless dissatisfaction from New York Yankees fans.
DJ LeMathieu will reappear at second base in the game against the Pirates. The middle-infield has been an area of contention for the Yankees as fans make calls for 2019 1st overall pick Anthony Volpe to be installed at the position over more established Yankees names.
The New York Yankees will kick off their regular-season action on March 30th as they play host to the San Francisco Giants.
New York Yankees still have some issues to iron out before season
Positional experimention is something that every manager has to deal with, and Aaron Boone of the New York Yankees is no different. As these things will figure themselves out naturally, it is important for Boone to remember that he is the skipper of the most powerful team in baseball.
