"God puts things in front of you for a reason" - When Cardinals’ David Freese overcame alcohol issues and returned to the game
Although David Freese will never see himself inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, his legacy with the St. Louis Cardinals will live on forever. The former third baseman was an integral part of the Cardinals' World Series victory in 2011, earning the World Series MVP in the process.

Despite his near legendary status among St. Louis Cardinals fans because of his clutch performances in the playoffs, David Freese had to overcome several obstacles early in his career to reach that stage. The infielder struggled with depression and alcoholism during his younger days which played a factor in him giving up on the game altogether.
In a 2010 interview with The Palm Beach Post, Freese opened up about his struggles with alcohol and how an arrest while driving intoxicated changed his life forever. Freese was arrested in 2009 while driving under the influence, entering the Cardinals' assistance program soon after.
"It was poor judgment on my part, but God puts things in front of you for a reason," the St. Louis Cardinals postseason legend explained.
After the drunk driving incident, Freese vowed to give up alcohol abuse and instead focused on earning a spot in the team's lineup. The decision ultimately paid off for Freese who eventually earned a role with the Cardinals before creating one of the most iconic moments in St. Louis sports history.
The arrest could have been the final straw for some athletes; however, Freese used it as an eye-opener. While David Freese went on to accomplish several achievements in his career including an All-Star selection, overcoming his alcoholism might be the most impressive thing he was able to do.

The arrest led to Freese's transforming his life in more than one way. After the incident in 2009, he continued his growth in the MLB and eventually enjoyed his true breakout season in 2011.
Although the eventual World Series champions' roster featured some of the biggest stars of the era including Albert Pujols, Matt Holliday, Lance Berkman and Yadier Molina, it was Freese who was pivotal in bringing the title home.
In Game 6 of the World Series, the Texas Rangers took the lead in the top of the 9th inning. Facing a two-run deficit in the bottom of the inning, Freese hit a clutch triple to tie the game for the Cardinals and force extra innings.

After another comeback forced an 11th inning, David Freese came to the plate. The infielder crushed the ball over the centerfield fence to secure the victory for the Cardinals and eventually secured the World Series in Game 7. Had Freese not overcome his demons, who knows how the MLB history books would look today.
