Kevin Pillar Landing Spots: 3 teams likely to pursue elite defensive outfielder after solid 2024 campaign

A bona fide journeyman at this stage of his career, Kevin Pillar has cemented himself as a fan favorite with each club he has played for. Despite being 35 years old, the elite defensive center fielder has expressed his interest in keeping his MLB career rolling in 2025.

"I've just had some time to reflect," Pillar said on Tuesday, via MLB Network. " ... I still enjoy doing it. I'm pretty sure I still want to play."

Even though he may be more of a platoon player now, Pillar can still provide clubs with plenty of value on defense, while also contributing at the plate.

He may no longer be a threat to launch double-digit home runs but he can still deliver one from time to time, hitting eight homers last season with the Chicago White Sox and LA Angels. He should draw interest from several clubs looking to bolster their outfield core. While he may need to settle on a one-year deal, he should have a few options heading into the season.

Here's a look at 3 potential landing spots for Kevin Pillar in free agency

#1 - New York Yankees

The New York Yankees front office will need to pivot this offseason after missing out on Juan Soto in free agency. While Kevin Pillar is in no way a replacement for Soto, he could be a solid outfield target that could help bolster their lineup.

With Soto and Alex Verdugo both likely gone, the club will need to address some vacancies in the outfield. He may not be the most appealing name on the open market; however, his ability on defense and occasional home runs could make him a low-risk, high-reward signing for the club.

#2 - Pittsburgh Pirates

It might be in the best interest of the Pittsburgh Pirates to not waste another year with Paul Skenes leading the club. The NL Rookie of the Year has been so dominant that the front office may need to speed up their process to contend sooner rather than later. Bringing in a veteran like Pillar would not only help solidify the outfield but also fill some areas left by departing free agents.

#3 - Colorado Rockies

The Colorado Rockies are hoping to improve after a disappointing 2024 campaign that saw the them post a 61-101 record. With club legend Charlie Blackmon retiring, the team could look to Pillar as a veteran presence that could help their young stars develop.

Pillar could also be used as a trade chip if they find themselves outside of playoff contention. Bringing in an elite defender such as Pillar could benefit the team and their pitchers win some games early in the year.
