"2 sh*tbags, perfect for each other"; "Yankees always on his mind" - Fans react to David Ortiz's comment on Juan Soto starting 'new chapter' with Mets
It is safe to say that the New York Yankees community hasn't heard the last about Juan Soto signing with the New York Mets. Recently, Boston Red Sox legend and Hall of Famer David Ortiz made fun of his rivals.
On Monday, Juan Soto posted a video on his Instagram covering the day he was introduced to Mets fans at Citi Field. The clip featured his entire day from signing the contract to his press conference where he was handed his Mets jersey and then his moments on the ground.
There were a lot of reactions to the video, but none caught everyone's attention as much as David Ortiz's. The Red Sox legend directly trolled the New York Yankees for failing to re-sign Soto after his mammoth 2024 season, partly a reason for such a huge contract. Trying to mimic legendary Yankees sportscaster John Sterling's famous call, Ortiz commented:
"The……. Yankees lose."
Yankee fans were quite upset at the reaction as they felt it was pointless and unnecessary from a player of Ortiz's caliber. They took to X (formerly Twitter) to vent their frustration.
"2 sh*tbags they’re perfect for each other," a fan wrote.
"Yankees always on his mind," another fan said.
"Big sloppy need to chill because his career is tainted," a fan tried to troll Ortiz.
"Papi should be a little more professional," a fan opined.
Fans also pointed out how Ortiz was one of the main protagonists from the Red Sox trying to lure Soto to join them. Eventually, they reportedly couldn't offer him more than $700 million and lost out on his services.
"He was licking Soto's b**ls to come to the Red Sox and the Yankees lose. Lol," a fan wrote.
"Funny that Ortiz is saying that when he tried to persuade the Red Sox into signing Soto," another fan wrote.
David Ortiz loves using 'The Yankees Lose'
David Ortiz has sort of popularized this customized version of John Sterling's call. He uses it often on air when he is an analyst for FOX Sports. The Red Sox legend had a fun time using it during the World Series when the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Yankees, alongside two of his co-presenters who were legends in New York - Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez.
While he can troll the Yankees as much as he likes, it is true that the Red Sox also fell short of signing Soto. They have their work cut out as they look to settle holes in their roster.
