2024 MLB Home Run Derby: Odds, Top Contenders, and Best Bets for the Win
The Home Run Derby is coming this week. After weeks of filling out the field, the star-studded event is set to go before the All-Star Game. It's a slightly different schedule for the All-Star week this time, but the Derby is still one of the top attractions. It's also one of the most fun aspects to gamble on.
The All-Star game is wildly unpredictable with all the substitutions and players used, but the Derby is a straightforward gambling experience. Here's what you need to know about it.
How to bet on the MLB Home Run Derby
First things first, bettors need to know the odds for all eight of the hitters. Via DraftKings, here's where they stand on Sunday, July 14, subject to change:
- Pete Alonso, +340
- Marcell Ozuna, +400
- Bobby Witt Jr., +475
- Adolis Garcia, +500
- Gunnar Henderson, +500
- Teoscar Hernandez, +950
- Jose Ramirez, +1300
- Alec Bohm, +1600
Naturally, the two-time champion and five-time participant Pete Alonso is the favorite. He arguably cares more about the event than anyone else and shows that during the Derby. It's hard to pick against him.
However, there is one dark horse to consider: Gunnar Henderson. The Baltimore Orioles star leads the field in home runs and is third in all of baseball with 27 home runs, with one game remaining before the break.
Much has been made about the lack of Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani, and other stars, but the field has good hitters. It does have a few that might otherwise not be considered, but Alonso, Marcell Ozuna, Bobby Witt Jr., Adolis Garcia, and Henderson could all easily win.
Either Henderson or Garcia might be the best bets. They have the longest odds of those mentioned above with a strong chance at winning. It's difficult to predict, but they would have the biggest payout without taking a huge risk on someone like Jose Ramirez or Alec Bohm.
The Derby will take place tomorrow evening, Monday, July 15. These players will have just capped their first halves and a few of them will be in the All-Star Game on Tuesday. The Derby takes place at 8 p.m. EST.
