"Alex Bregman can play 2B, 3B, or SS" - Ex-Phillies GM sees Astros star as possible free-agent acquisition, ponders change for Alec Bohm, Bryce Harper

Houston Astros star Alex Bregman will head into free agency this winter. The Scott Boras client played out his final year of five-year, $100 million contract.

The Astros have an opportunity to offer him a $21.05 million qualifying offer for an extension as per the contract, but in the event that is declined, there is chatter that teams such as the Philadelphia Phillies might be interested in adding his services.

On "The Phillies Show" podcast, co-hosts Todd Zolecki and Jim Salisbury questioned ex-Phillies GM Ruben Amaro about possible free-agent signings for the team in the offseason. As per Amaro, Bregman would be a solid fit for the team because of his versatility inside the diamond.

"I like Alex Bregman, I mean I think he's a good baseball player. He knows how to win, I have seen him since he was kid in LSU and I know that he is a baseball rat, he wants to be a really good player. He's one of those guys you can actually play him at second, third or short. I think he can be a Gold Glove player at either one of those positions," Amaro said. [21:27]

Amaro went onto explain that adding the 2x All-Star might necessitate a few moves, such as Alec Bohm moving from the hot corner to first while Bryce Harper, who has been the primary 1B for the team, can go back to his earlier days in the outfield.

"I am not advocating necessarily to move Alec Bohm but maybe Alec moves to first and Harper goes to left, I don't know I think you have to be open-minded and creative," Amaro added. [22:28]

Alex Bregman's send-off in final game in Houston signals end of an era

Alex Bregman transformed from a rookie in 2016, to being one of the experienced players leading the team to two World Series titles over the years.

The Astros gave him a fitting goodbye in the final regular season game at home against the Seattle Mariners. One of his walk-up songs played as he was replaced to a rousing ovation at Minute Maid Park.

The Astros might be willing to consider $21.05 million for a year, but beyond that it seems like he will get better offers.
