Alex Verdugo's brother claps back at MLB broadcaster after he calls for Boston Red Sox to trade him
Alex Verdugo is one of the few remaining pieces of a Boston Red Sox roster that has been chopped up and shipped around the league over the past few seasons. Since moving to Boston from Los Angeles, Verdugo has been one of the team's most consistent hitters. The outfielder is able to hit, hit with power and get on base.
Despite his solid stats with the Sox, one MLB broadcaster called for Alex Verdugo to be traded. Matt McCarthy tweeted on Friday that the Red Sox would be wise to dump Verdugo:
"I'd trade his ass in a heartbeat"
Verdugo has been a staple in this Red Sox side for the past three seasons. During that stretch, he had an impressive .288 batting average and an exceptional .343 OBP.
The tweet did not go down well with Verdugo's brother. Chris Verdugo was having none of it and responded with a blunt and hard-hitting response to McCarthy:
"Hey Boston fans, does it get annoying listening to people on the radio who don't know what they are talking about"
The criticism of Verdugo seems unfair. He was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise gloomy season for the Red Sox. Amongst players with 100 or more games, he finished third in batting average (.280). He also ranked second on the roster in hits (166) and fourth in total runs (75).
The Boston Red Sox will expect outfielder Alex Verdugo to play a big role in 2023
Since being drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2014, Verdugo has steadily worked his way up the ranks. He made his MLB debut in 2017.
The 2019 season was a breakout year for the lefty hitter. He went on to play in 106 games for the Dodgers and slashed an impressive .294/.342/.475.

A move to the Red Sox was when Verdugo really hit his stride. He averaged .308 in 2020 with a .367 OBP. After putting up career highs in 2020, he helped guide the Red Sox to 92 wins in 2021. He finished with a .289/.351/.426 slash line, 13 home runs and 63 RBIs.
The Boston Red Sox have been under pressure since finishing last in the AL East with a 78-84 record. They will look to rebound next year and will count on Verdugo to play a bigger role in 2023.
