"Anthony Rizzo gets off, starts talking to police officers" - Ian Happ tells Mookie Betts how Yankees 1B & Kyle Schwarber saved his wedding day
Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ talked about his friendship with Anthony Rizzo and Kyle Schwarber in a conversation with LA Dodgers' star Mookie Betts. Happ, who made his Cubs debut in 2017, formed quite a bond with Rizzo and Schwarber as the trio spent three years playing together in the windy city before both Kyle and Anthony moved on in 2021.
On Thursday's episode of "On Base with Mookie Betts," Happ told Mookie how Rizzo and Schwarber helped him get to the venue for his wedding.
"There's a lights parade in Chicago, on Michigan Ave," Happ said (27:14). "It was November, right around Thanksgiving, and the lights parade was going on, so they had Michigan Avenue blocked.
"The hotel where we were doing the reception was right off Michigan Ave. So, there was a parade and you couldn't get through. We get on the bus, and nobody can get through, nobody can get to the hotel.
"Our bus, Rizzo gets off, starts talking to the police officers, so they start moving barriers. Schwarber got off one of the other buses and was talking to people, we got people walking in tuxes through Michigan Ave, through the parade, it makes for a really good story."
Ian Happ talks about painful 'Simpsons meme' catch in Wrigley Field
Ian Happ also told Mookie Betts about how making a catch at the ivy wall of Wrigley Field was deceptively quite painful. In the final game of the series against the New York Yankees on Saturday, Happ took a catch, which raised hilarious comparisons with the popular meme featuring Homer Simpson.
When asked how it feels to hit the wall, Ian Happ said:
"It hurts bad, it's brick behind there. I've had two of them this year, the first one really messed up my shoulder, I got some butt on that one (against the Yankees) which is nice, a little bit of cushion. It looks like it's just ivy, but right behind it's brick, there's no padding."(5:25)
The catch proved to be an important one for Happ and the Cubs, as it contributed towards holding the Yankees offense at bay late in the game. The Cubs eventually held on to a one-run advantage to win the game 2-1.
After losing that series at home to the Yankees, the Cubs made an impressive comeback, winning the series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.
After a day off, Ian Happ and Co. head to Denver to take on the Colorado Rockies, as Javier Assad takes to the mound in the series opener on Thursday.
