Anthony Rizzo Injury Update: Yankees manager Aaron Boone shares positive update on 3x All-Star's return from arm fracture
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone has shared a positive update on All-Star 1B Anthony Rizzo's recovery progress. Rizzo fractured his arm in an awkward collision with Boston Red Sox's Brennan Bernardino back in June and has been sidelined ever since.
On Sunday, the player started his rehab assignment with the Yankees' Double-A affiliate Somerset in Portland, Maine. In that game, he was 0-for-4 with a couple of walks and a scored run. He is set to feature for his next assignment on Wednesday.
In an appearance on the Talkin Yanks podcast on Tuesday, Boone opened up on the player's progress after his recent rehab assignment. He said that Rizzo would still need some time on the field as he is currently playing as a DH and will be further evaluated by his performance in his next rehab assignments. (Start at 22:31)
"We will see because he hasn't played the field yet that's what they are holding off on a little bit so we will see. I don't want to shortchange it or get ahead of it. He is playing today and Wednesday also and we will re-evaluate where he is and what we need to do," Boone said.
Anthony Rizzo has played a total of 70 games this season for the Yankees before he got sidelined due to this injury. However, his performance before getting hurt wasn't great. He was hitting just .223, with an OPS of .630, eight HRs, and 28 RBIs.
Anthony Rizzo reflects on his recovery progress, hopes to return to the big leagues soon
The Yankees' Anthony Rizzo has opened up on his recovery progress. The player is optimistic about making a return to the big leagues soon after being on 60-day IL since June due to his right forearm fracture.
"I feel great and am seeing the ball well. I’ve got to come back and produce. It’s not like I’m coming back having hit 25 homers with a bunch of RBIs and a good average. I wasn’t playing like the best version of myself before I got hurt," Rizzo said per the New York Post.
After having an injury-prone season last year, Rizzo expected to have a better one this year. However, it turned out to be the same for the veteran star.
Last year he suffered a head injury when he collided with the San Diego Padres' Fernando Tatis Jr. He had just one home run over a 46-game stretch after the collision and was eventually placed on the IL in September.
