"As bad as it gets, the worst feeling you can have" - Gerrit Cole emotional after Yankees lose World Series

It is double the pain for a long-time New York Yankees fan like Gerrit Cole to be one of the players on the roster to lose a World Series. The Yankees starter tried his best to bring his team back in the series but some lackluster defense sealed their fate in Game 5 on Wednesday.

Gerrit Cole had a convincing start to his game on the mound, earning just one hit and walking two in the first four innings. Meanwhile, his teammates had already piled on a 5-0 lead with Aaron Judge, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Giancarlo Stanton all going yard.

However, all went wrong in a horror fifth inning. With a runner on base, Judge dropped an easy catch off a fly ball from Tommy Edman. In the next at-bat, Anthony Volpe had a throwing error that loaded the bases.

Cole struck out the next two batters. Betts chopped off a weak hit toward first baseman Anthony Rizzo, but due to a lack of communication between him and Cole, no one covered first base as the Dodgers scored a run. Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernandez then piled on the misery as the Dodgers tied the game.

The 2023 Cy Young winner stayed on the mound and completed his start with 6.2 innings with six strikeouts and four walks. He earned zero runs but gave up five.

After the game, he spoke about the sad end to their season:

"This is as bad as it gets. It's the worst feeling you can have."

Gerrit Cole backs Aaron Boone as skipper of the Yankees

Heading into the season, there were question marks about Aaron Boone being the right person to lead the Yanks after they missed out on the playoffs last season. After the World Series, Gerrit Cole supported his manager.

"He backs up his players, takes care of his players. That's what you want to play for in a manager," Cole said.

Aaron Boone and the Yankees will go back to the drawing board and prepare for next season as the wait for the elusive 28th and record-extending title continues.
