"As a former player, I feel for him" - Player agent Scott Boras takes the high road after Jordan Montgomery blames him for "butchered" free agency
After winning the World Series with the Texas Rangers in 2023, Jordan Montgomery wanted a lengthy contract in free agency and had Scott Boras negotiate deals on his behalf.
Despite having the resume to land a big contract, Montgomery settled with a one-year, $25 million deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks in the offseason. Moreover, his signing took place late in the offseason, indicating that all didn't go well in the offseason.
On Saturday, news surfaced about Montgomery not being happy with Boras after a "butchered" free agency, as the pitcher recalls. Boras addressed the allegations made against him and took the high road, wishing the player well.
“I saw what Jordan said. I know what it is to be frustrated with this game. As a former player, I feel for him,” Boras said. "I’m also a lawyer with obligations to my clients, including former ones. So I cannot discuss what happened or the decisions Jordan made unless he permits me.
"I relay all offers and relevant information to all my clients and act at their direction. They make all the decisions. We wish Jordan well."
Scott Boras is known for making big deals, which has been his reputation over the years. However, the past offseason didn't go as well as he or his clients would have liked.
Cody Bellinger, Matt Chapman, Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery were among those who expected lengthy contracts, only to settle for short ones with the season impending.
What did Jordan Montgomery say about Scott Boras?
In his shade thrown at Scott Boras, Jordan Montgomery mentioned a Zoom call he had with the Boston Red Sox, which he thought went well.
“I had a Zoom call with the Red Sox. That’s really all I know. It went well,” Montgomery said, via the Boston Herald. “I don’t know; obviously Boras kind of butchered it, so I’m just trying to move on from the offseason and try to forget it.”
It seems nothing materialized between the pitcher and the Red Sox, and now the former World Series winner may have another go as a free agent once the season concludes.
