Baseball fans react to Mike Trout and Mookie Betts' assessment of Edwin Diaz's freak injury at WBC 2023

The New York Mets' worst nightmare unfolded on Wednesday night when star closer Edwin Diaz suffered a shock injury after Puerto Rico's World Baseball Classic (WBC) game against the Dominican Republic.

As the Puerto Rican players jubilantly celebrated their monumental 5-2 victory against the Dominicans, Diaz collapsed on the ground. He eventually had to be wheelchaired off the field.

American national team stars Mike Trout and Mookie Betts said it was unfair to blame the injury on the WBC, terming the injury nothing more than a "fluke."

Mets fans swarmed Twitter after the news was made public. With the new MLB season just around the corner, a majority of the fans were left unimpressed with how the situation unfolded. Many of them were also miffed at Trout and Betts' comments.

@BNightengale I hope the Mets sue the WBC
@BNightengale He got injured celebrating, not playing baseball. It was a fluke.

@BNightengale Get injured in an event that has zero due to the org should result in losing your contract.
@BNightengale This happens all the time in soccer and World Cups / Europe Cups. The biggest clubs have to pray that nothing happens to their £€$100 million stars, but these players rather play these tournaments than their club leagues. National pride is a very strong motivator.
@BNightengale 😂😂😂😂😂😂ironic when Diaz simply could have chose not to play and had a functional ACL
@BNightengale Why don’t they just have it at the end of the season like they do with hockey worlds? Then if someone is injured they can recover.
@Nedved93 @BNightengale Because they just played 162+ games, they are taxed. They want to recoup.
@BNightengale I’m sure they have some sort of insurance for this situation
@BNightengale They’re not wrong.
